It looks like some kind of beetle. It probably blew in through the window. Freaky moment! Don't worry, it's not the kind of thing you find more of in hamster cages - it looks like a summer bug that just came in through the window.

HE ATE SOME APPLE FROM MY FINGERS TWICE TONIGHT!! wasn't brave enough to get some from my palm but baby steps, I feel less like he hates me now haha

Aw that's lovely. He seems a really sweet boy.

He would never hate you. He is still adjusting to his new home. This is all new to him.

It is lovely he took food from you. 🙂

I was casually spot cleaning when he jumped and squeaked at me so I think it’s gonna be best to get him out the cage before I spot clean

It's very early days and he will be nervous about anything being done in his cage. You only need to spot clean the pee for the first couple of weeks :) After that he might be ready for some out of cage time. Have you found where he's peeing yet?

You probably don’t need to do much in the way of any spot cleaning just yet as it’s still very early days, it’s best to just leave him to settle for a while, up to a couple of weeks so I wouldn’t try taking him out yet.

Nope I’ve got a funny feeling it’s in a burrow which will make spot cleaning 10X worse

If you’re not sure where he’s peeing yet what are you spot cleaning? For at least the first two weeks you won’t need to clean anything, just do food & water but otherwise leave the cage alone.
They really don’t pee that much & to begin with often pee in a few different places until they settle on a regular pee spot so there won’t be much to worry about, you can try putting a litter tray in or near the entrance to the house but I wouldn’t try changing anything just yet, let him settle first.

He'd probably use a litter tray :)

It is normal for a new hamster to go underground the first couple of weeks and they may behave completely different from their previous home until they settle in.

It takes a micro sd card, connects to wifi and plugs in. It records all night so you can watch next day on your phone, or you can watch live on your phone while upstairs. It's infra red so shows up in the dark. Here's an example.

Agreed. These are great. I like to use it occasionally to see what ours gets up to at night, because he often waits until we turn the lights out to come out (except if we're teasing him out with food for a "play session"). It also helps me gauge how active he is and check up on him while we're on vacation to make sure he's still doing okay at night.

put reggie in his playpen today to show him it was safe and a good thing, I transported him in a un useable wheel. He was a bit frantic at first when put in but soon found lots to occupy himself. I'll leave it a week until the next one

That is a good idea. Reggie is still settling in. There really is no rush to interact and get him used to you. It will happen in time. :)

He'll probably be less frantic in a week's time :-) It's really hard at first when you want to just handle them and they're not quite ready :) Have you got a tube he could walk into? He might have felt a bit insecure in a wheel. They usually walk into a tube, then you can put both hands over each end and lift the tube out, if the playpen is close by. But if it's some distance, I wouldn't carry him in the tube as they can push at your hand and make you jump and there's a risk of dropping it then. So in that case, just have a box next to the cage and put the tube down in the box so he can walk out and carry the box to the playpen :-) If he doesn't just walk into a tube, you could put a smelly treat at the far end (eg cucumber or cheese) and that should tempt him in.

You can’t really see becuase he had zoomies but when I was taking his back to his enclosure he was inspecting me haha having a touch and sniff of my hands and chest. Update on the bigger sand bath he LOVES it I’ll drop pics

I moved his sand bath, put some more bedding where he’d kicked it up, sprinkled safe herbs and moss and added some rattan balls with treats in and he loved feeling the new textures on his feet of the moss and herbs

That looks great. The bigger sand bath including a hide is such a good idea. :)
