We've put his tube in from his old cage, we plan to take it out in a few days. If anyone has a savic plaza..where have you attached the silent runner wheel?

It looks great :-) He'll love that. I usually put the wheel at the back but it depends what layout you have as to where it fits best. I mainly have it at the back so I can see the hamster running - depending on where you sit! Some people have them at the side.

The big platform will be nice for him to sit under and he has a lot to do in there.

Looking at your set up - the right hand end might be the best place for it. Where the little steps are attached to the bars. It would mean moving those. Because it's probably best to leave everything else where it is and it wouldn't fit above the platform.

OK thankyou, does everything else look OK? Does it need anything else adding?

It looks really nice for him :) Lots to do and lots of shelter. I'd check the bendy stick bridges for any gaps a foot could get caught in - you can stuff bedding in the gaps :) Personally I'd add more substrate - maybe at the house end and raise everything a bit at that end so the substrate slopes down. The wheel end (assuming you'll put it at the right hand end) you can't really have it any deeper as the wheel will take up the space.

I think it'll have to go to the right, I can add more substrate, I thought pushing the house down into it was right. I'll change it...🤞

It's fine :-) There is no problem pushing the house down into the substrate. The thought was - if the substrate is higher at that end, then he has more options for digging. However if it goes above the base it can fall out through the bars, but you can put cardboard round the inside bars at one end to keep the substrate in. Not sure if I'm explaining very well :) If it's deeper at one end it gives him the option to dig some tunnels. Sometimes they like to burrow down under the house.

So not so much about raising the house but about raising the substrate level at that end so it's about 20cm deep maybe - and then you can still push the house down into it (or just leave it on top of the substrate). You might need to raise the corner shelf then as well.

Yeah that makes sense.
I put the shelf over the top to make it dark. Didn't want to make everything tall and him fall. I'll check the bridges too

It can be a bit of a faff tying cardboard inside the bars. To keep it in place it needs the odd big of sisal string or a plastic cable tie maybe. I sometimes use plastic cable ties - pulled tight it is flush to the inside with the long bits on the outside (which can be snipped off when fastened).

Not sure if you've seen the cage cleaninging article, but the more substrate you have in - the less often it needs cleaning out :-) You can go months without needing to change the substrate, and just spot clean mainly. It's only really the pee that needs spot cleaning - and the base of the cage stays clean and dry.

That shelf is lovely for making it dark there. He shouldn't have further to fall if the substrate is a bit deeper at that end - it's just proportional then - so the shelf would be higher, but the same height above the substrate.

Do you know where he pees?

Yh that's why I got the kaytee bedding.
I'm not sure where he wees yet, it was in the tube and the recess. When I moved him I scooped the waste into a little box, so hopefully he uses that

I'm sure you'll find out soon :) The cage is great as it is - it's just these days they reckon 20cm of substrate in part of the cage helps with natural behaviours. They certainly like burrowing down in it under a house sometimes, or burying hoards deep down under their nest.

You could do it later maybe. But it looks really lovely and enriched for him :)

My partner has just said he can't find him, I've panicked with it being his first night in the new cage. Lifted the shoe box lid and there he is. It's good he's left the tube but I feel bad that I've scared him now 😒

Aww, dont feel bad. You just wanted to make sure he was safe. He will soon forget about that. 😊

My brain said he's escaped, at least now I know. He'll forget later when he sees me at the cage with dried apple. 4 prices he took off me last night. He actually saw me and came to get them! Clever boy. Thanks for all this help and guidance x
