Many items we can find cheaply in charity shops, our kitchens, bargain shops etc are very useful and cost a lot less than items marketed for hamsters.

People can get overwhelmed by the cost of setting up a hamster home as it soon adds up. I'll make a start with cheaper alternatives.

Porridge.
I use this porridge for my hamsters who love it. I scoop porridge, 2 scoops water and 35 secs in the microwave. Done.
The tube is a great size for a Syrian tunnel and the scoop is perfect for the hamster mix jar.

Cheap oil burners from b&m or home bargains make lovely hides as they come in different sizes. Watch out for any decorative holes. This tiny clay pot is from Hobbycraft and various sizes are available from garden centres. Tupperware from my kitchen.
This sandbath is tiny as its in my emergency dwarf bin cage.

This is a great thread Beryl. I am still fascinated by the porridge oats as I've never seen them like that before - only in plastic bags or conventional boxes (or sometimes paper bags). Where do you get them from?

Pringles tubes make good tunnels too and shoe boxes make good houses :)

I second oil burners, also some ceramic bird feeders and mugs.

Glad you mentioned bird feeders, Riven. They are great. I bought this toadstool bird feeder from Aldi years ago and they had similar ones in b&m this year.

I always wondered where people got those nice ceramic toadstools :)

Loving these cheap accessories. What a great thread.

No cost sandbath container from strong cardboard packaging (coffee machine).

If you have a Flying Tiger near you, they sell tealight holders for 50p which make great food or water dishes.

I'm getting these for new hammie- I haven't used with a hammie before but have a tortoise (regularly use the plastic super big saucers as water bowls for pebble). I wasn't sure on size so im getting a couple of options to see which works best and whatever doesn't work will either come in useful for playpen time or will be given to snake or tortoise ;)

Thank you for linking the terracotta saucers! I have been looking for those in a slightly smaller size than I have now for a reasonable price and you have just linked them! Mine came with Rodipet houses originally but they are great as a kind of foraging food dish, or something to put under a water bottle as well as somewhere cool to sit in hot weather.
