Today I got a new hamster! He's a young male (apparently) dwarf, from the Pets at Home adoption centre.

There were four dwarfs there, separated due to fighting. I asked to see each of them to choose one. However, when the assistant lifted the house off the second hamster, the poor thing reared up and looked terrified, so I picked him. I knew I could only help one hamster and when I saw him so scared, I wanted it to be him.

The assistant was decently knowledgeable and made sure I knew to keep him alone and not feed him sugar.

He's a screamer, and getting him into the carrier was an ordeal. He screamed again at home when I got him out of his carrier. But then once he was in his cage and had had a moment to realise that he was safe, and he had a full bowl of food, he really calmed down and had a great time exploring. So I'm not sure how his personality will turn out but I'm excited to get to know him. :)

I haven't named him yet as I'm still thinking about it. In the adoption centre he was named Bruce but I don't think I will keep that name.

I had to use the paper cup to get him out of his carrier!

Oh, he looks a poppet. Bless you for taking him in. I’m sure he will thrive in your expert care 🤗

Aww, he is so cute. He looks very cute looking up at you. I am sure his confidence will grow once he learns he is safe. :)

Aww he’s lovelly Daisy, he does look so cute in his cup.
I’m sure he’ll settle soon, I do have a bit of a soft spot for the scared ones, one of my Russians was a real screecher for weeks but became the cuddliest ham I ever had!

Lovely news - he’s very sweet and I’m sure he’ll learn to trust you :)

What a little cutie. Hopefully he'll settle now he knows he's safe.

Absolutely that look!

Thank you everyone! I'm hoping he might make an appearance at some point tonight, but he had a stressful day so he might not.

Actually as I'm typing I can hear him moving around...

So I'm not entirely sure how this happened, but he somehow got himself trapped behind a hide in one corner of his cage. And when I say trapped, he wasn't actually trapped because there was a gap of two or three inches which I'm sure he could have fit through with just a gentle squeeze. But he just wouldn't leave and he was starting to smell because he was just peeing on himself in that corner. It was very odd. I had the impression he wanted to get out, but just couldn't, for some reason. So I had to take the hide and he immediately started exploring his cage again.

I'm not sure what was about. He does seem a strange little thing!

Aww! That is a bit strange, maybe he was just a bit scared being in a new place & wasn’t thinking straight! Sounds like he’s enjoying exploring the cage apart from that little blip!

He was probably glad you came and helped him ❤️
I hope so. I was worried he might just be hiding and I might be disturbing him by removing the hide, but I was about to go to bed so I couldn't possibly leave him there all night if he was trapped.

It sounds like he maybe still has some hangovers from being attacked perhaps. I'm sure he'll soon get past these things and get used to his cage and contents :-) Lovely that you helped him.

Possibly. He is a bit skinny and he's quite small, so I wonder if he was perhaps being bullied.

He came out this afternoon and screamed when he saw me, but I don't think he's really scared of humans so much as just scared of everything. He doesn't seem to mind when my hand is in the cage as long as he knows what it is.

I don't think he knows how to sand bathe yet, and he has a big seed spray but doesn't seem to know what that is either. I'm sure he'll figure it out in time though.

My mum thinks I should keep the name Bruce but I'm still not sure. I have some names in my head and I'm waiting to see if one sticks.

He looks so cute in that photo! He has a lot to learn but I’m sure he’s going to really enjoy figuring it all out.
I expect the right name will come to you as you get to know him.
