Today I got a new hamster! He's a young male (apparently) dwarf, from the Pets at Home adoption centre.
There were four dwarfs there, separated due to fighting. I asked to see each of them to choose one. However, when the assistant lifted the house off the second hamster, the poor thing reared up and looked terrified, so I picked him. I knew I could only help one hamster and when I saw him so scared, I wanted it to be him.
The assistant was decently knowledgeable and made sure I knew to keep him alone and not feed him sugar.
He's a screamer, and getting him into the carrier was an ordeal. He screamed again at home when I got him out of his carrier. But then once he was in his cage and had had a moment to realise that he was safe, and he had a full bowl of food, he really calmed down and had a great time exploring. So I'm not sure how his personality will turn out but I'm excited to get to know him.
I haven't named him yet as I'm still thinking about it. In the adoption centre he was named Bruce but I don't think I will keep that name.
I had to use the paper cup to get him out of his carrier!
