The next heat wave!

The next seven days we are having a miniature heatwave (37-30 degrees) but the sun is so hot 🔥 you feel like a fried chicken 🐔 if you have to do anything outside. 🫣

Summer seems to be turning out to be one long head wave. We will need to talk about cool waves at this rate 🥵

Well last night was the worst one for the midges. One went up my nose! So that kept me awake for a while and plenty of nose blowing. It's a cool breeze and slightly rainy here today though.

The cheeky little things! I am glad it’s cooler and hopefully the nose squatters are gone 🌺

There are still some in the bedroom tonight as well. I guess I'll have to try and find some midge mesh for the window. It's becoming an expensive summer! We've also had a few butterflies in the house. Caught them and set them free again.

This year seems like there are loads of them in the UK 🇬🇧 my aunty has the same problem. We had a cold winter with lots of snow, so not too many this year 🙏

Glad the weather is improving. It's sounds strange to say better weather = rainy and windy but if it shifts the midges and makes it easier to sleep then that's good ❤️

My vet came up with a good solution for the hot days. He is currently moving into a new clinic and I have not spoken to him for weeks. These overs are normally made for watering plants, but can be used for keeping enclosures cool. For this purpose they must not be filled with water, instead you fill them with sand and add just a tiny amount of water to dampen the sand. Then you put them in the fridge. After they are cool enough you can put them in the enclosure but must dig them in the bedding so that they cannot fall over. They give the coolness then into the bedding and they are non toxic and hold the coolness for a long time. I will add a link, but they can also be found in most garden centres.

Yes, they are the reincarnation of my ill fated terracotta wine cooler ❤️ I must have a look for them. I have ordered some butterfly pea flower tea ☕ so can console myself a bit. You have a clever vet 🥰🐾

He’s lovely. He asks if London is still so hot and how your piggies are dealing. I told him that you and I shared helpful cooling tips and he came up with the oyer pots. He is very old school and very affordable as he complains that the new generation do a lot of unnecessary faffing in order to get their new equipment payed off 😂
I have ordered those pots, I think they will last longer than the old mugs. So when I am at work I will not worry.
He told me only to use the ac (when it arrives) in extrem hot weather, and to keep an eye that the air doesn’t get too dry. And not to cool the room down lower than 23 degrees.
He rolled his eyes about the cellar action (he was not available at the time) and said it was a bad option. He told me hamsters can deal with higher temperatures than what is advised on the internet (25 maximum) if you cool the enclosure down. It’s not great as he explained, but better than a damp environment or stressing a hamster in a strange place.

Aw, he is nice. The piggies are staying close to their ice bottles in a wet sock, often lying against the bottles. I like to put their hay into the base of a cat carrier lined with paper towels and then place the bottles of frozen water next to the carrier so the piggies can feel the coolness through the plastic carrier. They make a hay burrow where it is cool and sleep and eat in the carrier in their tunnel 🥰🐾🐾

That’s a good idea. I put a cool bottle on the outside of nibbles enclosure where he has his window 😅 he presses his little paws 🐾 and his bum against the cool plexiglass 😀
