Raffy (Syrian Hamster)

They've all gone - haven't seen any for a week, once his main cage had all the bedding chucked and a hoover around. It'll take me a while to get him moved back though as I'm still having to rest a lot.

That's great to hear, fingers crossed they never come back.

I blooming hope so!

Raffy was playing hard to get last night. I offered him the tube about 10.30 pm when he was out having a wash. And he wasn’t interested. Too early! So I waited. Went back at midnight and he still wasn’t interested. So I went to bed having sat up for the hamster without a hamster.

Having missed a night he was dead keen to be out and is zooming around now and then and pottering in between.

Aww, sounds like he wanted a quiet night in then missed free roaming.😊

Yes maybe that was it. I think I just had the temerity to suggest he came out earlier than usual and that fudged it for the night!

Yup, you broke his rules. He was just trying to train you :P

Raffy last night :-) He doesn't look like he's almost two years old does he?! I reckon he'll be two around the end of the month.

Aww, lovely picture and videos of Raffy. You would never guess he is almost two. He looks so much younger and he is always full of beans. I wonder what he could hear in the last video. :)

It was me talking to him :-) I left the sound out though.

He is such a cute hammy, has so much energy

Thank you all :-) He is always very curious about anything that changes or moves in the living room. He still has that bright perky look he had when he came to me :)

Not sure how old 2 is in Hamster years but I wish I had his energy 😍

It's quite old! About 80. 40 years per hamster year. The calculation varies and some say about 36 years but I think 40 is about right. They are often looking older and maybe a bit doddery by two. Most of my Syrians have lived to about 2 years four months, but the first one lived to 2 years 8 months. So that seems about right - he would have been well into his nineties! The rare times one lives to 3 - they would be the equivalent of our centenarians.

Also with humans, it's after age 80 and during their eighties they seem to become more frail and that is usually the case with hamsters past the two year mark.

So when I disinfected Raffy’s plaza 120 I decided to put all the ceramic and plastic stuff in the dishwasher. To make life easier. Afterwards there was a strong fishy smell in the dishwasher which wasn’t very nice. So I put then through again. Still a strong fishy smell! I sniffed individual items and inside a ceramic pot smelled very strong. I’m thinking he might have pee’d in it. So will now end up washing them all by hand anyway and the dishwasher is having a hygiene cycle! I hope that gets rid of the smell!

Oh no! That is really bad luck. What a load of work for you to do now.

I wonder if one of the materials the pot was made of leeched into the dishwasher because boiling hot water would get rid of any wee.

You would think so wouldn't you? It was teracotta inside in places so maybe soaked up the smell.

How strange and what a pain. How hot was the wash? Surely 60 or above would kill any germs etc.

Yes the dishwasher would have been hot enough to disinfect :-). They just need handwashing now to try and get rid of the smell. Maybe putting porous terracotta in the dishwasher wasn’t the best idea! Or maybe the per interacted with the dishwasher tablets! So I’ll just use fairy liquid as usual now!

Good news is - the dishwasher is back to smelling normal after the hygiene wash.
