Raffy (Syrian Hamster)

Yes had a good look this afternoon and there is a little gap he could get round maybe. So need to think of another solution.

Cheeky little Raffy, must’ve been quite funny with your OH suddenly seeing him stroll into the room. How crazy it would be if our hamsters simply roamed our homes 😆

I think Raffy definitely wants to live in the house with us and not miss out on anything! I can't have him upstairs though - it would be impossible to completely hamsterproof - he seems to like bedrooms though! Cheeky thing. OH was in bed as well lol

Really they just want to go further and further. I need a creative solution.

Sounds like Raffy is very determined. Perhaps he's trying to tell you something.

Raffy: I'd like my cage moved to your bedroom.

I think it's just the latest challenge to get out of the room lol and now he can do stairs. He can go up but I bet he can't get down!

Albert can't climb back down the stairs either. He sits waiting for me. I cup my hands and he walks into them to be carried back down.

I wouldn't bet on that. Remember Rory? It was his nightly sport to jump down the stairs.
Now that Raffy knows that there is more to explore upstairs he'll keep trying. Hamsters aren't quitters.

So tonight. My goodness he is fast and determined. Tonight we had the stairs blocked off with three melamine lap trays, a giant atlas, two other books and a lever arch box file, on both the floor in front of the stairs and on the top step and plastic hides stuffed into any corners. No way could he get past that. Wrong!

He was regularly disappearing over to that corner of the room. I heard a noise and looked round and he'd actually pulled one of the melamine trays over and was sitting on it - looking cheeky. Back it went wedged in a bit more. He ran around the room a bit more then I heard another noise. Went to investigate and he had pushed the lever arch file up, and got underneath it onto the top step. The noise was him trying to scrabble up the surface of a plastic hide - he was almost onto the second step. When I went over he hid lol. So retrieved him into his tube and he had to go back in the cage.

I think Frida is right in that he wants to go upstairs because he knows we're there - and because it's somewhere new to go. Whereas before I used to sit up late with him (can't do that at the moment!). He is completely maverick since he was left in his cage for two weeks.

But now he knows there's somewhere to go he wants to go there as well.

However I am making progress with the re-bonding - he did sit for a stroke for about 30 seconds tonight and had his ears stroked, without trying to wriggle free.

He really is so determined, he’s been storing up all his energy while you were ill so he can create havoc now!
Glad you got to have some time with him for a stroke, he’s probably too over excited to sit still for long yet.

It seems nothing is going to stop Raffy 🤣 I just imagine lots of furniture piled up at the bottom of the stairs and Raffy still getting through 🤣

That is just what it was like really! Blocking the stairs isn't going to work. It needs the whole end of the room blocking off and that's not really possible so I think he'll have to have out of cage time in a different room, which is hamsterproof but much smaller. All these months and he's never tried to go upstairs before!

As Raffy moves around so quickly these days, it's not easy getting a photo of him. But here he is last night.

Hello Raffy1
He looks tiny thee, lovely to see him out & about having fun.

Yes that perspective does make him look small - with the distance :) He never has been the largest of hamsters but is average size and weight. He was about 185g but last time I weighed him it was 200g and I cut back on the sunflower seeds a bit! He was starting to look a bit too round! Must weigh him again.

The curtains hang just over that robot hoover ................I've seen him contemplating them a few times so I watch him carefully. They are quite slippery material though and he hasn't tried to climb them - yet.

Raffy likes to be on the move, just as well the robot hoover doesn’t start up and take him for a ride. That would startle him.

Raffy only got about 15 minutes of out of cage time tonight. I'm too hot and tired and it's getting slightly frazzling keeping an eye on him. I got the stairs blocked well tonight. And the kitchen is blocked off. But then heard this rustling and he'd managed to scale the barrier in the far corner - the main bit of hamsterproofing. Partly OH fault for leaving something on the floor next to it which made a convenient step. But I was looking at it the other day thinking - if he tried hard enough he could get in there.

So I feel mean. He's not getting much out of cage time right now. But he gets up late and he's turned into a ninja. Of course he'll be even more active tomorrow after not being out much tonight! I think we can't do free roaming in here any more though. It's either the playpen again or the other smaller room - where I have nowhere to sit (but can rig something up).

Anyway here he is tonight - the little Raffmonster ninja.

Have you tried sitting on the stairs to keep him off them?
I think the extra few grams suit him. He looks very cute and cuddly.

Stairs were well blocked tonight :-) It was the "hamsterproofed" part of the room that was the issue tonight!

Ha ha - I think he lost those extra few grams after I stopped giving so many sunflower seeds and he's about right now but need to weigh him and check. Thank you for saying he looks cute and cuddly :) I think so too.
