Raffy (Syrian Hamster)

One thing that was nice last night. I still had bits of egg box all over the coffee table and the lid of one fell on the floor. (I didn't cut up the lid). When Raffy was out he went and sat in and looked at me looking all happy. I suspect he remembers when he had an egg box hammock :) Not that the one he had ever worked very well as a hammock as it was a long one - it was more for overhead cover than for sitting in.

Aw, that is adorable! I wonder if he would like one as part of his free roaming time. :)

I think he would, so I've left it out with the other toys.

I did think it looked quite funny when just the top of the head was sitting on the substrate in the cage.

I still can't get the vision out of my head of Raffy sitting in the egg box lid on the floor last night! He looked so cute and happy. I went to reach for my phone and he immediately scampered off again. It was like "I remember my baby toy!". Charlie was like that over the green pod house from the Hamster Heaven shelf. I used it out of cage and in the pet carrier afterwards and he always seemed to look like he remembered it and was happy with it. He was like that with his Rainbow bridge as well. I do think they have early memories.

That sounded like such a precious moment. It is a shame when they are too fast for us to get a photo.

Raffy was sitting on his shelf earlier so I went to say hello and he stuck his head between his legs. I thought he was pulling out a poop at first but he was washing his male parts. Charming. Clearly I interrupted his wash time.

I did enjoy watching Raffy tackle his Easter treat. Doesn’t matter what it looks like, it’s the enjoyment that counts!
Loved watching my grandson yesterday tackle his Easter egg from us and the chocolate decorating his face! It’s the love and enjoyment that counts the most.
I am completely hopeless at art and crafts and never have I ever created anything recognisable or worthwhile! So well done Maz and Raffy loved it 😍

I'm up a bit late with Raffy. He had his usual routine of pouching food and taking it back to his house, then sitting on his shelf for a wash, a quick hop on his wheel and then wants to be out. I noticed he has been peeing and pooping on the large terracotta saucer under his water bottle. Clearly too far to go back to his house to use the toilet!

Raffy sounds as though he’s enjoying his routine & keeping you up late!
Had to laugh at the convenient toilet under the bottle, he probably thought you put it there to save him a journey!

When I went to empty Raffy's toilet the other night I saw he had made it all cosy. I felt mean having to move all that bedding to get it out it was a carefully constructed thing with a hole in the middle. Cosy toilet :) I'm sure he's put it all back again now though. He is still a quirky hamster and nests in the tiniest possible compartment in the house - the one that's not quite big enough for a hamster nest and intended for hoards! The larger compartment in front of it, where most of my Syrians have built a big cosy nest - is stuffed with bedding (for insulation presumably). His nest is rather cute and hamster shaped and he has some snacks in there with him.

It's all very neatly done! So cute how he made it comfortable for himself and the way he likes it.

So much hard work isn't it! They must hamster away doing this stuff at night. Although to be fair I think most of the work was done just before the winter, when it started feeling cooler. The cosy potty area is recent though.

I think it looks neat because it's all flat on top where it's been packed in agains the roof! Actually thinking about it - this is another way they create deeper bedding. If the house is 10 tall and sat on top of 15cm of substrate and they pack it full they have created a nest/burrow in 25cm of substrate by using the house as framework - perhaps.

I gave the hamsters their Easter treats last night, even though it's not yet Easter Sunday :) . Here is Raffy with his demented looking Easter chick treat.

So adorable! His color is actually pretty close to Cinnamon's, though Cinnamon's white band in the middle is fatter.

Thank you  Yes Raffy's white band is hardly a band - it's more of a thin line! I think of him as biscuit coloured usually but he can look quite cream and glossy at times.
