Raffy (Syrian Hamster)

I think that’s just the angle of the camera :-). But he’s not a particularly large Syrian.

I always know when Raffy is awake now by the banging noise! He goes straight to his shelf and chews the dandelion root which bangs up and down on the shelf as he chews at it.

Love the videos of Raffy with his Christmas treats, that was so cute when he ran off with the little snowball one!

He looked a whole year younger exploring around like that, great to see him so active and curious.

Raffy is back in his Plaza 120 in the living room :) I let him have an explore in it last night, just before his free roam. That seemed to go well, so popped him in there after his free roam for the night. It needs more adding to the cage - I'd forgotten how big it is. But he seems happy with it at the moment.

This is him exploring before he moved in - no food in there at this point - it's quite a long video at about 8 minutes, but he checks out absolutely everything :)

He seemed very pleased to have his old wheel back and his pot in the corner. It's a slightly different set up to before - some things had to be thrown away and I also decided to leave out his big shelf and roof run as he's coming up for 2 years old and although still very active, I think in the next few months the levels could be a bit risky - so he has low levels and two cork logs. And a new Happy Henry Homes house, which is the same size and layout as his old Rodipet house (which isn't made any more). A bit more needed to fill up the space though!

Also I later removed the Christmas hanging thing from the bars in case he tried to chew the string through the bars, after seeing him investigate it. I had intended to have a digging box in there and had bought two bags of cork granules but they weren't very nice - black and smelled burnt, so didn't use them. I had a bit left from a previous bag that were nice ones so at the moment it's just an egg box of cork granules! But he seemed to find it interesting anyway.

Raffy still seems very active and interested in everything on this video I didn't think he was showing signs of ageing I think he's still looking good

Aw thank you Socks Mum! Jain - I will tell him you complimented his youthful looks :) Raffy has always had a very lively and perky personality but yes he does trust me now.

Raffy settled amazingly quickly. Probably because one plaza isn’t that different to another- as long as his layout is the same - and also he is either asleep or out free roaming mostly - not sure what he does at night but presumably enjoys the cafe then.

I have had a marathon cage cleaning session the last couple of days. With moving two hamsters into spare cages when I had the moth outbreak, it left me with four cages to clean! Raffy’s plaza 120 was done first so he could move back into it. Only one other needed disinfecting thoroughly and the other two needed just a general clean before putting them all away. Thankfully we have a walk-in loft room/storage space.

I don’t think I’ve ever cleaned three cages in two days before.

Anyway life is getting a bit more back to normal and organised here (famous last words!)

So sweet to hear Raffy is settled in his cage. I bet he is loving the extra space. :)

It is great you managed to clean all the cages. That is a lot of hard work!

It was and I’m glad it’s done! I have to say I was wishing they were tank style cage as easier and quicker to disinfect inside instead of lots of pieces to deal with. On the other hand the cages do fold flat for storage. I don’t really need two spare Plazas but one has the odd rusty bit so might be useful for spare parts for the other one.

I thought about that but one has quite a few rusty bits so I’ll just keep it for spare parts. :) Im a bit of a hoarder like that - keeping things just in case - drives OH mad.

Raffy on his saucer tonight

Raffy really is flying on his saucer! Lovely to see him, sounds like he’s happy to be back in his old cage too.
