Raffy (Syrian Hamster)

It wasn't the doorbell going off that was spooky particularly. It was blooming Alexa saying "there's somebody at the door"! Lol.

That reminds when someone i was working with (i'm a support worker) shouted at Alexa "Alexa, shut the f... up!!" and Alexa came back with "I'm sorry, i didn't reckognize your request".
It must have been a programmed response to the sound of the door bell. That's technology for you.
No Alexa round here.

He had already had his out of cage time after OH had gone to bed though.
Yes but your OH finished watching a TV programme and made Raffy wait which would have annoyed him. Hamsters aren't that patient when their minds are focused on something.

I wondered about that. But he was ok while out of the cage after that. Or do you mean when he heard OH talking again later it annoyed him? It's good Raffy is waking at 11pm now but we will need to adjust our bedtime routine! I think his night privacy was disturbed in a big way!

Poor Raffy it does sound as though he was a bit upset after his eventful evening, I hope he was just making an annoyed noise & will have got over it by now, sounds pretty stressful for you too!

Momentarily it scared me a bit! Ha ha. Things that go bump in the night. But I was more concerned about Raffy afterwards. I hope he's forgotten it by tonight. I'll give him some extra treats. Before the clocks changed in October, he was always up about 9 or 10pm and used to the TV and lights and us chatting - but I would just pop him in the playpen in the other room. Now his playground is the living room ................I might start letting him out in the downstairs bedroom instead but not much to do in there.

I was joking yesterday about building a partition so Raffy had a run between the living room and downstairs bedroom and us moving out ha ha.

Hi Maz, that does sound like an eventful evening, I’d have been pretty scared with door bells ringing and Alexa talking, guessing Raffy just got spooked himself by all the extra activity. Hope he’s back to himself tonight.

Thank you Zara :-) It's 11.15pm and he's not up yet!

11.45pm tonight. Maybe he was making sure OH had gone ha ha. He's fine and back to normal. Back in the kindling box again and I had to tip it to let him out. The downside to free roaming is - it can set back the taming a bit. And he is harder to handle again now. But then it is his most active time of night. So probably important I still have some regular handling sessions as well.

That chirping noise sounds a bit like the noise my hamsters used to make to each other when I had a female and some males in the same room (syrians).

I love their noises.

I would have been scared at the bell going late at night. Glad it was a false alarm.

Raffy has started pulling his water bottle out of its stand to get my attention when he wants to come out :)

Sometimes - if he does it noisily. Other times he isn't noisy enough and I find him sitting next to it looking at me as if to say - oi - didn't you hear that?

After getting up earlier and earlier each night (it got to 10.30pm!) he has now started getting later and later again. Hmm. Gone midnight the last few nights.

They’re so funny and you’re very good to stay up til midnight to let Raffy out. I’ll keep that a secret from Hams, if he doesn’t appear by 10:30pm he misses out 🫤 this can result in a bit of ‘Hammy cage rage‘ wt upturned food bowls and substrate throwing through the bars, but the following night he’s then always up the minute he hears me. 😆

Not good really! We're sometimes up till 11.30 at week-ends anyway, then there's all the bits and pieces to do before going to bed - and just as I'm about to go - Raffy is wanting to be out. Now if he sees me - and I still go to bed he is furious next day! I do leave him the odd night (very rarely) when I manage to get to bed before he gets up! But once he's up and he sees me ...............

Now he's started getting up later again, and can't get past the panel/out of the room any more, he has gone back to mainly running on his wheel and saucer under the table again with not so much exploring.

It’s a shame he’s gone back to getting up later again, could it be anything to do with the weather? It’s got much colder at night here again after a warmer spell.
Sorry Raffy but I had to laugh at him being furious with you for not waiting up!
