Raffy (Syrian Hamster)

No cereal cupboard as nobody eats cereals. Probably plent of crumbs on the floor though! I just know when he's not in the room any more! I don't think he'd been in the kitchen long as he was just wandering around in the middle, but skedaddled off to the inner hall when he saw me. I went to pick him up but he wasn't having that, and went into the downstairs bedroom again, so I shut the door and went to get a tube again. As before he was nowhere to be seen. I eventually saw him hiding under something ha ha. So put the tube down and he walked into it. He had an enormous piece of fluff stuck to his whiskers.

Maybe it’s his determination to get into the kitchen that’s getting him up earlier now, he really is on a mission & must be so pleased with his success!
It will be interesting to watch & see if you can figure out how he’s doing it……

Raffy is out again this morning. It's an early start morning today so once he sees I'm there, he starts racketing to come out. He had a bit of strawberry porridge - clearly something more important than trying to get out of the cage. And is now rummaging around with some cardboard boxes. He just fell in a box of wood kindling and couldn't get out again.

Is there no end to his adventures! He’s a very daring ham & obviously enjoying his early excursion.

Ha ha. I am definitely going to have to keep an eye on him as his horizons spread! He was eying up the curtains earlier - climbed on something to investigate them hanging down (they're about 8" above the floor). They are quite slippery material and he pawed at them. But it wouldn't surprise me if he has a go at climbing them - so I may have to bunch them up out of the way.

There's no stopping him now!
Had to laugh at the Raffy in the kindling box moment. Plenty of chews in there.

So - not a cereal cupboard - but a hamster food cupboard! A plastic storage drawer at the bottom of a stack of plastic storage drawers, which wasn't closed properly and has chew sticks and other things stored in it. Yes Raffy got out again. I've seen how he did it. I watched him sort of digging away at one corner of the board and he'd managed to lift it a bit at one corner. I heard a bit of noise while he was doing it. Because it's wedged at the sides, it stayed up when pushed up from the bottom. I called him over and he looked guilty and ran back over to me. However later he must have sneaked back again later and had a go at the other corner - which is out of my range of vision! Quietly. I thought it had gone quiet. Had a look and there was a raised corner with a gap under it.

As before he had gone straight into the downstairs bedroom. Thinking about it, he's very familiar with that room. His playpen used to be in there at one time.

So I shut him in there while I went to take the barrier down and get a tube. When I went back in it was hunting time again to find him. But I heard a rustling noise from one corner. He was right at the back of the storage drawer with all the snacks! He looked so cute and cheeky - thinking he was hiding in food heaven and I couldn't see him. But the noise gave him away.

I really must carry my phone with me so I can snap him doing these things! And looks like we need a heavier, taller piece of wood.

Yes you must. That would have been a priceless picture! Even without a photo i had to laugh at Raffy. He's a clever and crafty boy.

😂 top marks for determination Raffy! He must have been able to smell that drawer a mile off & had so much fun finding it 😍
And looks like we need a heavier, taller piece of wood.
Awww you’re not going to spoil his fun!
Photos would be great, it is a must see!

Poor Raffy - has had an upset I think. An uneventful time free roaming while he was out last night. Except he fell in the kindling box again twice (it's only a few inches high but he can't get out again). Timings are different now though. He gets up earlier every night virtually now. Last night he was up at 11pm which is a much more reasonable time. Unfortunately OH was still up and watching something on TV so he had to wait a bit. Too much toing and froing going on with two of us in the room before bedtime and Raffy heads for feet ............So I waited till OH had gone to bed and then let him out. He is not used to both of us talking to each other when he's awake! He is used to just me being there. So I think this might be relevant (or not) to what happened later.

Raffy had had a good long time out of the cage and was back in his cage. I was about to go to bed and had turned most of the lights off. Then suddenly the doorbell went which frightened the life out of me as it's quite loud. It's one of those "Ring" doorbells so Alexa told me there was someone at the back door at the same time as the ring. Well I panicked slightly and called upstairs to OH. Who the heck would be out here in the middle of the night. It was slightly scary. OH came down and got a torch and had a look outside and there was no-one there. We were talking back and forth about what could have happened for a while with a light on. Suddenly I heard this noise from Raffy's cage. He was sitting there looking at me and started doing some funny movement and making a sound like a little bird.

I took it that he was upset about all the noise and upheaval in the middle of the night, so OH went back up and I turned most lights off and went to see Raffy. But he didn't stop making the noise like a little bird. I'd talk to him - he'd do something normal in his cage but all the while making that noise.

I was getting a bit worried about him so got him out of the cage again (he was dead keen for that still) and all the while he was still making this noise. At that time of night there was no way he was going to sit still on my knee. Although I did give him a little stroke and tried to talk to him but he just carried on chirping like a bird. So I popped him back in his cage. And he still carried on. Eventually I thought maybe I could distract him out of it so gave him a bit of cheese. Which he dropped and carried on walking about the cage making the chirping noise. But then he came back to it and started eating the cheese so I turned the light out and he stopped.

I have never heard him make a noise before. I know some hamsters are quite vocal (but not Syrians usually I think). I don't think it was a happy chirping noise. I think he was either stressed or cross or upset. So it was probably just a bit of a fright and noise and disturbance for him in the night.

Still don't know why the doorbell went off! It only rings if someone presses the button. However the internet had been off and come back on again so I'm putting it down to that.

I did a short video clip while he was on my knee chirping - you might need to turn the volume up full to hear it.

Oh Maz I am sorry Raffy got a fright. You must have been so worried. How is he today? I imagine the loud door bell scared him and he sensed you were scared too. How creepy the doorbell going off like that. Perhaps it made the noise due to the internet being reconnected.

He's asleep :) I probably won't see him till this evening. Yes it did give me a fright. Maybe Raffy did sense that but I think it was OH and I talking in his night time period as well. He is not used to me talking to OH - only to him! But I do think he was a bit stressed.

That sounds like an annoyed noise.

Not unlike the chirp Rodney used to make and Clive sometimes makes.

He definitely sensed something or maybe he was annoyed already because your OH was up late and then the doorbell noise set him off.

And Alexa talking to me too! I think I can set a "do not disturb" so Alexa doesn't talk in the night! The ring doorbell also has a video on your phone so you can see who is at the door. And there was no-one there but there were some funny noises. Maybe a bird flew into the doorbell or something.

Thanks Beryl. I would rather he was annoyed then stressed. It had me quite worried at first as he was making some strange movements when he made the noise initially - like he was trying to vomit.

He had already had his out of cage time after OH had gone to bed though. But it was a big change to his night routine, OH coming down again and talking to me. Because we were unsure as to what was going on we maybe talked and checked things for about 10 minutes and that is not something Raffy is used to very late at night. And the lights back on again. The doorbell and Alexa talking probably did alarm him, because it definitely alarmed me! And me calling out to OH to come down.
