Otto looks so cute peeping out of the bedding. Sounds like the cage move went well. He will have more space now which is great as he seems to prefer space to anything else. :)

Otto seems to know that he is the only Syrian in the house so there's no competition about who gets out first.

The dwarfs are daytime freeroamers and the Robos rarely want out.

Otto gets up 21.00/21.15 now which is about an hour later than his usual time when Clive was alive. He does his normal hamster stuff of running around, sniffing and wheeling and seems content.

Otto loves the deeper substrate and extra space to burrow. There are a few holes in the substrate Otto dives into and we can sometimes hear him moving around underground pushing his hoard about or nibbling from it. Luckily he still surfaces to use his toilet. I gave him a second water bottle and placed it on ground level which he seems to appreciate. He drinks from bottle and bowl and goes for the nearest one.

His Alaska is set up as a foster cage and there's a rescue pending which is either happening on Sunday or not at all so the Alaska is on standby until then.

Sounds like Otto is enjoying life and his new home. It's lovely he's enjoying the deep substrate and burrowing.
It's good you've got the Alaska ready for a rescue/foster home. I hope goes well on Sunday 😊

I am so pleased to hear Otto is enjoying his new cage. He does seem to love space and burrowing.

I too hope all goes well on Sunday.

Aw it sounds lovely and Otto sounds happy. Interested to know who is coming on Sunday .............

It does sound as though Otto is really enjoying his cage & having a good time burrowing, love to listen to them underground & wonder what they’re up to.
I’m curious about Sunday now too….

I think that Otto is a little put out by Cedric's arrival. He gets up earlier again and wants more out of cage time.

I give him extra attention to reassure him and let him out first to have the whole space to himself while Cedric is still downstairs.

Last night i sat on the floor and suddenly he nudged my hand with his nose so i picked him up. He sat on my chest for ages enjoying a stroke and looked very relaxed.

He's done that with my OH before but not with me. He may be a bit jealous of Cedric but it's good to know that he feels comfortable with his human family.

I wondered how Otto was taking it. He was the new boy before and then the only Syrian wasn’t he? Yes it sounds like he wanted a bit of reassurance and it’s lovely he sat for a stroke and cuddle :).

Aw, that sounds really cute. I love the way he looked for reassurance from you.

Otto nudging your hand with his nose is very cute. He obviously wanted some love from you 💕

It must be a bit strange for him with the changes but I expect he’ll get used to Cedric being there, it’s lovely that he came to you for reassurance.

Otto moved in after Jack died. And then Davy moved in who was the new boy. Yes, after Davy had moved out and Clive died he was the only Syrian for a while. During this time Otto got up later and later. At one point he didn't get up till 21.15.
Now he's up around 20.00 which was his usual time.
Lilly had been racing around since 19.00 tonight which woke and annoyed Otto who started climbing the bars demanding to get let out. Lilly run back to her taxi anyway so it worked out well.
Otto is very energetic at the moment and runs around at top speed. I think it's important to him that he gets out before Cedric.
Cedric is currently running around on the floor and Otto is running on his wheel.

I'm wondering if it would be better for Otto to have Cedric permanently in a different room but where. Downstairs gets a bit cold in the winter for a barred cage and i need a 100cm+ space upstairs which i don't have aside from the hamster room where Otto and the two little ones live.

I have an idea though and need to get the measuring tape out tomorrow....

I'm looking forward to the idea!

Me too 🙂 hope all goes well for the lucky hamster going to live with Beryl 🤞

I'm well aware that Otto looks a bit like a skinny version of Jack but that was not the reason i got him, not consciously anyway.

For practical reasons, i.e. fading eyesight of a pair of oldies, i had been looking for a cream or white male Syrian hamster, ideally short haired and not a baby or youngster.

This afternoon i sat on the floor while Lilly was out again and browsed through the freeads. Otto's ad caught my eye because he was a hamster in a Hamster Heaven going for free. Hamster Heavens sell for around £25/30 so there's always a risk of a hamster falling into unscrupulous hands and possibly ending up as snake food.

Someone was trying to rehome him on behalf of a friend who didn't have the time to give him the care and love he deserved. The family was genuine and really wanted a good home for him.

Otto lived in a Hamster Heaven without a wheel but had a big blue hamster ball. He had toys but they were either dangerous or too small. He had Carefresh bedding but was fed on nuggets. They tried and cared but didn't know about hamsters.

His original name sounded similar to Otto so i called him after one of my late uncles.

Otto is around a year old and tame. He's currently exploring the hall playground.

Always interesting to hear the background stories of the hamsters you rescue so may people out there ignorant of hamsters needs and welfare I was one of them fortunately I did research before bringing Pete home original cage I'd bought had to be exchanged and I would have unwittingly bought shavings for a 2 inch floor covering and the pellets went in the dust bin also the breeder was up to date with current standards so I could get the set up right before bringing Pete into his new home.

Otto looked at his hanging treat and then headed for his food bowl.
Otto is a hamster with a routine though.

If Otto doesn't want it I'm sure there's another ham in your house who will 🤣

Davy ignores anything hanging (apart from Pick & Fly which I attach to the bars with clips - but he only eats some of that he doesn’t like the grass or the flax). He loves the pale brown stuff - no idea what it is!
