Agree with that absolutely. It's huge progress. With our first Robo (and I think with Pip) it was about a year before I was accepted fully. That may be because I didn't attempt taming earlier but they were more comfortable and mature at a year old.

He's certainly listening but he keeps listening and doesn't run off which is huge progress with a Robo.
That is so nice to hear! Thank you. It has taken 6 months for him to feel more confident and so worth the wait. :)

That is so lovely to hear. Maybe he likes the way I do not try to go over to him and let him get used to things at his own pace. Who knows.

As you all know, I gave Orko a health check today. To do this I had to take everything out of his cage as I could not find him. I found out some interesting things. He toilets in one place which is under one of his platforms. This was great as I could easily remove that. I found a huge hoard which was under his green wheel in the middle of his cage under some bedding. The hoard was so neat with everything spread neatly. I noticed there were not any mealworms so he must like them too much to hoard. I found a piece of dried chicken which surprised me as I thought he would eat it. I think this shows he is tidy in all parts of his cage.

My partner managed to take some cute pictures of Orko when he was in his carrier. This one is my favourite. :-)

Orko in bedding.webp

That photo is so cute! I don't think that Orko looks all that frightened more expectant of what is going to happen next.

To know where a hamster toilets is ever so handy and cuts cleaning down to a minimum.

Oh really? I am happy you think he does not look scared. He kept trying to get out of the carrier so I assumed he was scared and stressed. I love that picture. :)

Yes, it is wonderful to know where he toilets. I just hope he continues to toilet there and not somewhere else now! Lol.

I also don’t think he looks scared :). When they’re scared they usually go right to the bottom of the pet carrier and hide under the bedding. I think he is just a curious Robo!

I have also found robos quite neat with their toilet area (especially when they have plenty of substrate) and usually surprised at the size of the hoard! But also how clean and dry it seems.

He said this photo was from later on. At first he was too frantic to get any photos. I guess he was scared at first but then maybe okay. He did hide under the bedding but kept poking his head out now and then and tried climbing out the carrier a lot.

Yes! His hoard was so clean and dry. :)

I’m sure your partner reassured him. Initially they are frantic to get back home but once out for a while they seem to get a sense of freedom and interest.

Oh yes. He sat by the carrier and spoke to him the whole time. I just hope he comes out as usual tonight. I will be able to update tomorrow. :)

He might go one way or the other. Either come out more as if to say - I want out! Or hide away for a while to avoid being caught again. Pip is currently awol and has been for about two weeks. Before that he was very in my face. I wouldn't even know he was there if the veg wasn't gone each morning. Assume he is cosy underground eating his hoard.

Aww. Maybe you could put the camera near his cage to see what he is up to. :)

The camera has lost it's place at the moment after rearranging the room to fit the Christmas tree in! I need to find somewhere to put it where it can view the cages. Good idea though. I think it's the cooler weather making him hide away though possibly.

By the way it is such a lovely photo of Orko - he really is a very gorgeous looking robo!

Great colour footage of Orko, he really is becoming more confident to come out even with the light on. Lovely he’ll also carry on about his business at the same time as hearing you talking, in time you’ll no doubt be able to sit near him too. I think all hamsters spook quite easily. Hams let’s me tidy while he’s sitting munching a seed but if I accidentally knock something or move too fast, he’ll quickly scoot off. Orko did make me chuckle tipping into the hide but then finding a meal worm and then completely acting like it was all supposed to happen that way. :)

Aww thank you. I am learning how easily spooked hamsters are. Haha I loved how he went head first into the hide too! 😍

Orko is very elegant with his movements. Look at this footage of how he navigated his tunnel hole. :)

Well Orko does not like crickets. He did not even sniff it. He acted like it was not there. When watching the camera footage I saw his purple wheel was jammed with bedding. He used his green wheel for a little bit but must have felt like using the purple wheel so barely used a wheel last night. This is not like him at all. He actually did not stay out very long. I wondered if he was cold but he used his cool tile quite a bit. The coldest it could have dropped to is 15c. It was 17c at 9.00. I am not sure if he was cold. I will try leaving the heating on tonight and see if he is more active. I know my partner will not be happy as he gets hot easily.

Here is an adorable clip of him rolling on his hide. I have not seen him do this before. Oddly, he does not roll in his sand.

I've never had a hamster that liked crickets either. I wonder what jamming the wheel full of bedding means? It has come after his big adventure (health check) as well so might be a security thing or a cold thing - hard to tell. Or a bit of both. Maybe he wanted one wheel full of bedding so he could get cosy in between running in the other wheel? Or - is he nesting in the wheel? I've heard of some hamsters moving their nest to their wheel if they think their nest is disturbed. Our first robo had two nests - and if I did any spot cleaning at one end of the cage he'd move to his other nest. Then when I spot cleaned the other half of the cage a couple of weeks later, he'd move back to his first nest again.
