Orko's adventures

I've never had a hamster that liked crickets either. I wonder what jamming the wheel full of bedding means? It has come after his big adventure (health check) as well so might be a security thing or a cold thing - hard to tell. Or a bit of both. Maybe he wanted one wheel full of bedding so he could get cosy in between running in the other wheel? Or - is he nesting in the wheel? I've heard of some hamsters moving their nest to their wheel if they think their nest is disturbed. Our first robo had two nests - and if I did any spot cleaning at one end of the cage he'd move to his other nest. Then when I spot cleaned the other half of the cage a couple of weeks later, he'd move back to his first nest again.
It was me who accidently jammed the wheel. I added more bedding to his cage yesterday and stupidly forgot to check the wheels would spin afterwards.

Oh right! So he's probably wondering what's going on there then!

Yes. I just found it odd he did not use the other wheel for very long. From time to time a wheel gets jammed with his bedding then he goes to the other wheel.

Ah I see. Maybe he just didn't get into that wheel because he prefers the other one. It was absolutely freezing cold here last night, and Raffy kept me up late, wanting to come out just as I was about to go to bed. The heating had gone off and I had to wrap myself up in a blanket as I was getting cold while he was out. He didn't seem bothered and ran on his wheel as usual but was on it a bit less than usual later on. In the end I put a heater on low for the rest of the night. I think it's just supposed to be freezing like this for a few days. Pip doesn't come out at all! Not even sure if he's using his wheel. I suspect he is but less. Must set up the camera and check!

I did not feel cold here. I wonder if poor Orko was cold. I will leave the heating on tonight. I have this feeling Orko is sad. I do not know if this is genuine or my guilt at doing the health check.

Aww, Raffy just loves playing so much.

He is bound to be a bit frazzled for a day or two after the change but he'll soon be back into a routine. My experience with robos has been - they don't want to come out. But once they have been out they want a bit more and think they are missing something. But they also like their cage and routine. But they do vary.

Thank you. I hate to think he is sad. I know you have do things for their own good. Hopefully he will be his usual cheery self soon.😀

Imagine how you would feel if something had been wrong with Orko and you hadn't done a health check.
You shouldn't feel guilty about doing a health check but it is understandable that you don't feel good about it.
Did you give Orko some tofu? That would cheer him up.

Aww thank you. You are right. I just never want him to feel scared. I stopped giving the stuff that was not actually tofu. I gave him a new whimzee. He is out right now and has been on his wheel and in his sand.😀

Orko did not collect all his seeds last night and did not touch the seeds on his snuffle mat. He has never done this before. He used his wheel and sand as usual. I am so worried.

So sorry to hear you’re worried. I wonder what is going on with him. The thing I tend to gauge them by is - do they eat the bit of veg daily. Because they never miss that. If they miss that, then I worry. Because the can’t resist fresh veg. If it’s any consolation Pip’s habits changed around this age too and he ignored scattered forage. Or he would gather it up eventually and then deposit it in a pile on top of his house - as if to say don’t want that, take it away.

Orko is maybe needing a day or two to adjust to the changes recently and may be less active at night now it’s colder. See if the seeds disappear during the day.

Thank you so much for replying. He picked out a few seeds here and there but he usually collects them all. I do not give him fresh food daily as he does not seem to like that but I will give him something today. He spent a lot of time on both wheels.

It is interesting Pip changed a bit too. Orko is 10 months old but with him being rescued perhaps that is not his age.

I left the heating on all night and it was 18c so he would not have been cold.

I think they do change habits slightly as they grown older but it could simply be he was so excited to have his favourite wheel back - after it had been stuck - that he celebrated all night on his wheels over choosing his seeds. I am sure he is fine. Keep us posted!

Aww that would be a nice reason. He was very active even running so he appears healthy.

Maybe also try giving him a bit of fresh veg daily from now on. It’s their raison d’etre with most hamsters! The thing they wake up for and look for. If he hasn’t had it before then every 2 or 3 days for the first week until his tummy adjusts to veg. Cucumber or a tiny broccoli floret go down a storm. I keep both in the fridge so they last for ages. With robos I find they leave it where you put it out and nibble what they want and leave the rest. I just remove the leftover bit next day when I put new out. Orko might possibly take his to his large pot to eat it in private but I don’t think he will hoard it in bedding - they seem too clever for that.

Especially if the tofu treat has stopped. It’s also very good for them.

Thank you. He likes pepper, baby corn and spinach only if it is from the market, not the supermarket. He sometimes eats broccoli and green bean but other times ignores it.

With tofu I am not sure if I should buy fresh tofu for him. What do you think?

I don't know much about Tofu! Elusive might know :)

I use the clearspting silken tofu for mine, I tried a few others years ago but found this was the only one they liked & I give a tiny bit with veg five days a week.

Thank you so much. That is really helpful. Can that tofu be frozen? I know it goes off quickly and he will be the only one eating it.
