Two clips from Orko last night. The second clip were he picked some bedding from his coconut was just before he went to bed. It was like he had a special piece he wanted to take to bed with him.

It's funny how for us all Kaytee looks the same but a hamster saves or picks out that perfectly shaped piece of Kaytee that he needs to make up his nest.

Great playpen. It's worth a try sitting in there as they often behave differently when out of their cage.

It looks amazing. It can be an idea to get in first with the hamster in the taxi and sit down and then put the taxi down.

The new playpen is not robo proof! Orko was having a great time then he decided to squash himself flat and escape! I was terrified. He went around the playpen, under the wardrobe and then came back into the playpen. I quickly tried to get him into a taxi which he realised and escaped again! He had such a fun time of trying to escape and come back all the while I was so frightened imaging him getting lost. When he came back for the fourth time he went into a hide and I quickly scooped him into a tube and my partner put him back. I measured the gap and it is about 0.5cm. I will have to think of a way of covering the gaps because there is no way he can use it. It was so odd because he looked like he had so much fun and was treating it like a game. I was terrified of moving too quickly or doing the wrong thing and having him get lost. He really has turned out to be very adventurous and I can see now he would prefer to free roam rather then be in a playpen. I am still shaking through the fear he would have got lost. When he went back in his cage he disappeared into his burrow then came back and ran around looking pleased with himself!

He’s getting really cheeky!
I can imagine how scary that was for you, just imagining them getting lost or stuck somewhere is pretty frightening, the main thing though is that he did seem to be enjoying it rather than getting stressed out so, deep breath everything is ok!
I have a playpen like that although I haven’t used it for a while but my Chinese would try to squeeze underneath & I guess it would be pretty easy for a tiny robo.
Hope you can find a way to block the gap so you can still use it for him.
I’ve got another playpen I made just by cutting a large piece of rigid plastic (can’t remember exactly what now) into four pieces, a hole at each corner then joined with cable ties & it sits flush to the floor as well as folding flat when not in use so maybe something like that would work.

Thank you Elusive. He was not stressed at all and he thought it was a great game!

Your DIY playpen sounds great. I hope I can think of a way of stopping the gaps in this. I thought of puting cardboard all around but im not sure. Pity there is no way I can let him free roam as he seemed to want to. 😂

Here are two clips of him in the playpen.

Oh goodness that must have been really scary for you! I had to laugh though because he is so cheeky. But a total pain if he can get through gaps. Is it those ones on the side? I remember seeing Newt's head sticking out from under the door once as he'd tried to get under it and couldn't get any further. He just looked at me and pulled himself back out again. It sounds really frustrating as to block those gaps will probably mean it won't be easy to put up and down each time. I was imagining draft proofing plastic strips or something - which would be ok if it was a permanent fixture but defeats the object of being able to take it down again easily.

I was trying to work out how he got back in the playpen again if he got out through a gap. The same way?

The whole thing has a gap of 0.5cm. I did not think he could squeeze himself through that. Silly me! It is funny though. The way he kept doing it like a game and then clearly avoiding me trying to get him back into his cage.

Yes! He squeezed himself back. I thought covering everything with the blanket would stop him but it did not. I am so lucky he came back into the playpen and did not go off somewhere!

He shouldn't be able to get through 0.5mm - that's less than mouse bar spacing! Maybe the edges are rubbery and squish to one side. So where is the gap? On the side? The base or the corners?

The gap is along the whole thing. It is secured by some kind of connecters and this makes a gap. I said 0.5cm not 0.5mm! He is not that tiny. They are a flexible material also so he may be pushing it with his body.

Sorry I meant 0.5cm 🤣 Yes it must be flexible for him to get through. Are you going to keep it or change it for a different one?

I am thinking of trying to see if I can cover the gap with cardboard which he will be unable to move. If not, then the hunt is back on for another one. No other one is as big as this and this is what he needs to keep him entertained. I looked at toddler playpens but I do not think mesh is a good idea with hamsters.
