Lump in cheek

The arthrocam shouldn't make her sleepy. It's just meloxicam and the excipients seem virtually the same as other brands of meloxicam so nothing there to cause her to be sleepy. It could be she is just feeling wounded so hiding away more while she recovers. And possibly some nerves after her procedure. Some hamsters avoid you temporarily just from a vet visit, never mind an operation. It's good she's eating and drinking. It's still early days so hopefully she'll be back to normal in no time :-)

The antibiotic could be making her a bit sleepy, but I'm not sure if it has that effect on hamsters. The vet will know. It's great that she is eating well. I hope she starts to come out more soon ❤

The antibiotic doesn't really make them sleepy either, but it can make them feel and look a bit off colour until the course is finished.

Yes I really hope so as this isn’t like her at all. She’s usually so inquisitive and full of beans but this is so sad to watch. She doesn’t even walk round her cage, she literally just runs out to use the toilet or grab food but that’s it 😔

It is hard. Give it a bit of time. She is probably a bit protective of herself right now after her op.

We haven’t got a vet appt till Thursday but I’m thinking to bring it forward. She looks so tired and has no energy. She is still eating but she looks so frail.

Both of her eyes keep getting stuck closed and she is spending most of her time with her eyes closed. I am cleaning them but I don’t think she is cleaning herself at all.

Starting to wonder if she is going to recover or if she is just suffering 😔

Oh no I'm so sorry. If she seems tired and frail and no energy then it does sound like she isn't on the normal recovery curve. Antibiotics can make them feel off colour but this sounds maybe a bit more than that. How many days is it since her op now?

The op was Thursday and her post op appt in this Thursday.

I’m going to see how she is later but she seems to be going downhill and now her eyes are getting stuck I’m wondering if her body is just giving up 😔

I'm sorry. It sounds like you know something isn't right. Post op check is usually after 5 days. It would do no harm to take her tomorrow instead of Thursday.

Took Peanut this morning and had her put to sleep 😭 She wasn’t recovering like we thought she would. She didn’t want to leave her bed, she was very wobbly and weak. They said her eyes being stuck shut was a sign of infection and inflammation even though she was on antibiotics. She also smelt really bad and I’m sure whatever was filling the cyst must have been going else where within her.

We’ve have a hell of a lot of tears today and the kids are heartbroken.

I keep telling them (any myself) we did everything we could for her and even though she hasn’t lived as long as we hoped, she has lived a thoroughly loved and slightly spoilt shorter life none the less ❤️

I am so sorry. It is so unfair. It maybe was a tumour after all. Either that or infection that got into her bloodstream. It is so unfair and very very sad.
Big hugs to you and your family 🫂 You tried your best for her.

Very sorry to hear Peanut has passed. You really tried very hard to save her. I'm sure she knew you were fighting for her and loved her. Sleep softly over the bridge little Peanut 🌈

Oh no! I’m So sorry for your loss. You did everything you could and you fought hard for her. (Although i know that doesn’t make it any easier)

Sending lots of love to you all.

Thank you everyone ❤️

Yes we tried our absolute best and that little lady cost me a small fortune but it was worth trying.

She has a little grave in our garden next to our previous hamster Nibbles the Ninja. We’ve not had much luck with our hammies, one with a neurological issues after 4 months and the next with a giant cyst at 15 months. I think this is the end of our hamster journey as the heartbreak is just too much 😭

Trying to find someone to donate all our hamster stuff to as my daughter keeps crying when she looks at the empty cage 🙈 She has been out speaking to Peanut’s grave each morning too 💔

Very sad 😔 I fully understand 🫂 The Blue Cross has a bereavement outreach (you may already know if it) if you feel you need it. The sight of the cage and things is so sad, it is very painful. I hope you can find someone to take them. I believe Maz suggested covering the cage with a blanket while it is still with you. It is nice that Peanut has a little grave outside. I am so sorry it ended so sadly.

I am so sorry. It's so unfair on you. You might feel differently in a few months possibly. If you do I would try and get a male Syrian from an NHC breeder. They are usually healthy right through to very old age. I know Nibbles was male but it sounds like his genetics might have been the issue if he was from a large pet store.

It's incredibly hard - you spent a fortune trying to save her and still lost her :(. I'm glad she has a nice resting place near Peanut.

I bought them both from Animaltastic in Henlow, which I had recommended to me as a good local pet shop. After Nibbles I asked them about where the source their hamsters from and they said they have a list of all their breeders and do not breed on mass. I accepted Nibbles must have been a one off which is why we went back there for Peanut too. They had great reviews and were highly recommended.

The kids would have another hamster in a heartbeat but I think I’m going to give it a while as I know I’ll just worry all the time that somethings going to go wrong again x

Unfortunately, unless they breed them themselves (and even that isn't that reliable) they will probably come from the same breeding background as larger pet stores. It's so unfair for hamsters to be born without a good start in life.

It might be that Peanut wasn't just a one off sadly. I'm really sorry this has happened. NHC breeders have ancestry charts and breed for health and temperament.

Are you restricted to keeping small pets? It can be tricky keeping a pet in this day and age. Some pets can be bought or adopted as mature animals and still have a good bit of time left to enjoy. It is a pity that hamsters, as well as rats and gerbils, only have a couple of years to live as they make charming pets, interactive, intelligent and affectionate ❤
