Lump in cheek

Posted at the same time :-) That sounds like a good option as well :-) Is it the same RVC one I linked above or a different one? :-)
Yes, they practice at the Queen Mother Hospital and at Beaumont Sainsbury's Animal Hospital in Camden.

The PDSA has eligibility criteria: pensioners, on benefits, very low income so there are some restrictions there unfortunately

Unfortunately the costs seem very high there :( The Cambridge one sounded cheaper.

I believe their costs are still subsidised generally, and only free for certain eligible groups, but I'm not entirely sure.

I haven't found them high really, for the south. The PDSA charges and the fees are about half of what I pay. The vets at the hospital are worth the price as they are very experienced and are helpful and realistic.

Ok so a consultation there or the Beaumont RVC maybe - perhaps the £300 to £400 was including surgery ...............

@Danibear18 could maybe phone the Queen Mother RVC, Beaumont RVC and that Scotts exotic vets and ask how much a consultation is. It should be no more than £50. I may be wrong but I think an exotic vet would suggest that if it's a pouch tumour, surgery may not solve it as they can affect a long way back. But I'm not a vet.

So I’ve called the RVC and they said the previous vet would need to refer me and the referral standard cost is £250. Then there would be costs to follow which I can email and they can give me an estimate on what I’d be looking at approximately.

@Maz similar to what you said, this lump has come up very quickly within a day or two.

The vet said he suspects an abscess in the pouch, that move freely so is not attached. We don’t know much more than that unfortunately.

I think because it’s a referral every jumps ip
In price too 😖

That's ridiculous - £250 just to refer you :( Maybe try ringing that Scotts vet in Bedford and ask if they have a vet that specialises in exotics. There is often just the one vet in a practice that is an exotic specialist - although I couldn't see anything specifically in any of the vet bios.

A good exotic vet would be able to give you more information and do the surgery themselves, if surgery was needed. You shouldn't need all these referrals. The key seems to be finding a practice in the area with an exotic vet.

C J Hall in London is an exotic vet a number of people have used, and they are taking on new customers. I would definitely try phoning them to see if you can have a consultation. They are very good exotic vets. A good exotic vet will be able to have an idea whether surgery is the best option or not, or what it's likely to be.

Our vet list here doesn't have any other suggestions for the London area - we really need to update it a bit .............

I think if you go straight to an exotic vet for a consultation, then no need for any referrals - they are already trained to do exotics surgery (if needed) and give an idea of a diagnosis. I would try C J Hall vet.

I'm sorry to hear this 😔

Hi All, Quick update, Mondays vet wanted to help me and referred me to their sister vets - Deepdale Vets.

The vet and nurse both mainly deal with small animals but are not classed as exotic vets.

Peanut went under this morning and they confirmed it was a cyst not a tumour thankfully. They said sometimes antibiotics aren’t enough. Interestingly it wasn’t connected to her cheek pouch either! They advised if they drained it, it’s very likely it would come back so recommended we fully remove it. She has just had the op and is still very sleepy so I’m waiting for her to come round so I can get her home.

Thank you for all your help and support on this post, so glad I checked the prescription quantity at the beginning and that I changed vets.

Any recommendations for foods that help with healing post op would be most welcome ☺️

That is really good news :-) So glad the vet helped you and it's been removed. What a relief.
