Lump in cheek

This is such great news 🙏 lovely that the vets were so kind and helpful ❤️ Socks loves a little bit of cooked butternut squash bought as frozen butternut chunks for convenience. That should be easy to eat. I'm sure Maz will have lots of get well soon recipes for lovely Peanut 🥰 It's so great as I'm sure you are ready for a break from health concerns ❤️🐾

Hi All, Quick update, Mondays vet wanted to help me and referred me to their sister vets - Deepdale Vets.

The vet and nurse both mainly deal with small animals but are not classed as exotic vets.

Peanut went under this morning and they confirmed it was a cyst not a tumour thankfully. They said sometimes antibiotics aren’t enough. Interestingly it wasn’t connected to her cheek pouch either! They advised if they drained it, it’s very likely it would come back so recommended we fully remove it. She has just had the op and is still very sleepy so I’m waiting for her to come round so I can get her home.

Thank you for all your help and support on this post, so glad I checked the prescription quantity at the beginning and that I changed vets.

Any recommendations for foods that help with healing post op would be most welcome ☺️
I missed the post op bit :-) Main thing is keep the room at 20 degrees c at least, 24/7 for the next few days. Hamsters can't regulate their temperature after an anaesthetic and need chance to recover. If she is in her regular cage, best to take out the wheel and anything sharp or scratchy she could catch her wound on. A hospital cage is sometimes set up and used but if you haven't done it already I'd leave her where she is and just remove anything that could be a risk. Also remove the sand.

Also have you been given pain relief? They really need it for a few days after surgery. Then there would normally be a post op check 5 to 7 days after surgery. To check wound is ok and stitches ok and no sign of infection.

Very glad to see that you have managed to get something done and that Peanut has come through her op ok.

I don’t have a hospital tank, so For post op recovery for Mr Maggie, as Maz says, I made sure the room was constantly warm for him. I removed his sand bath, his apple sticks and his edible sprays. (I left in his pagima sprays which he doesn’t eat but still gives cover)

I left his sand box in the tank but replaced the sand with paper bedding so he kept using it as his bathroom.

I removed his wheel for a few days too to give him some time to rest and recover.

He had to be on soft food for 2 weeks post op (he underwent a partial pouch removal) so I gave him soaked science selective pellets as well as a teaspoon of baby food and a teaspoon of porridge (with a soaked pellet of science selective mashed into it for good measure)

Hope she’s doing ok and that the cyst is gone for good- must be a big relief for you both.

That is a good point. Did the vet mention anything about soft food for a while? With it being a pouch operation?

So Peanut is home, still a little wobbly and very sleepy but she is eating. She’s had some egg to line the stomach for meds, lettuce and melon to help keep her hydrated. I have put her a tiny bowl of water near her bed so she doesn’t have to go far to drink or use the bottle which needs effort.

The receptionist commented on how lovely she was and that they had all been holding her as she was very interactive pre-op ❤

They cyst wasn’t connected to the pouch in the end, it was underneath, so her pouch is still in tact but the stitches are under her chin. They haven’t said to avoid hard foods so she had her normal dry mix but isn’t really eating it as I’m giving her little fresh bits every 12 hours with her meds.

She’s is on the same antibiotics as before and Athrocam for pain relief.

I called the vets today because her neck and chest are wet where the wound it and she smells so bad. They said the cyst was huge and that is smelt really bad when they drained and removed it 🤢

They recommended I buy leucillin and clean the area very gently with a cotton bud avoiding the stitches.

I have just removed the sand from her cage which she uses as a toilet 🙈 Hoping she will still use it with Kaytee in there.

She has urinated a lot overnight so she is definitely not dehydrated thankfully.

Brave little Peanut and brave Peanut's mom, well done. The cyst wound should heal quickly with the antibiotics and having been operated on. Great that your vet has been excellent ❤️

It was huge :-) I bet she feels much better now that is gone.

My goodness that was a large cyst!

Hopefully she’s feeling better now it’s been excised.

Wishing you a speedy and uneventful recovery with Peanut. Xx

Be warned - after the first 24 hours they often become quite lively again! :-)

She has been sleeping a lot, she comes out for food and meds but that’s it. She goes straight back in her bed.

I welcome her becoming lively again as I’m still worrying a bit at the moment. She looks like a little old lady and seems a little frail. However she is constantly eating when we give her food with meds and is taking little bits back to her bed 🙏🏼

That's positive :-)

Is it quite a large wound stitched up? When Pickle had his op he seemed frail until I watched the nightcam and saw him hanging from the roof bars of his hospital tank! I ended up getting up in the night to give him playpen time so he didn't hurt himself.

So the wound is about half and inch.
(It’s quite hard to see among the very messy fur) It goes from near her mouth and under her chin. She’s got some tiny stitches.

She is eating lots but I can’t tell if she is drinking. Usually I hear her on her bottle but she can’t currently access that (it’s on the level above and I’ve removed the ramp up there for now to keep her safe). So it’s really hard to tell if she is drinking from the little fish or not as she isn’t out of her bed for long. She is weeing so I’m assuming that’s water and not just the meds.

Tonight she has eaten scrambled egg, broccoli, 2 meal worms and melon. Each piece the size of her ear for reference.

As soon as I put her back in her bed she runs straight for her cage like she wants to be left alone 😔
