Iphone and Ipad users

Presumably other websites are having similar issues 🤔 If so, I guess an update from Apple to fix the glitch will hopefully be imminent.

I don't know - it does seem specific to the images that had the exif data removed, because the newer images can be viewed fine. They also have the exif removed on uploading but its a different process. So yes Apple is a bit more "fussy" perhaps generally but it does seem to be only the images that had the exifdata removed. And that shouldn't make any difference at all.

Now I could get ALL the images converted to the new webp format (instead of jpeg) - Apple devices can definitely see webp images - which is why on an iphone you can still see all the images on the home page - they are all webp. BUT - older Apple devices pre IOS14 can't see webp images.

The fact that images uploaded in the last two months are ok does suggest that it is site related. But it doesn't really make sense!

I'm looking into options but they are all complicated - maybe apple will have an update soon!
Maybe us Apple users are going to have to accept the downside. I can view the old pics in Firefox on my MacBook, so I’ve caught up on my inspiration now.

Honestly you are a hero going to all this effort 😘

That's great you can see them in firefox - when I tried firefox on my iphone it was just the same. And well I do like the site to be running well and don't like any annoyances! It's also a shame. I don't have a solution as yet but maybe an IOS update will improve it or something.

Sometimes forums aren't perfect the longer they are around - for example former members who close their youtube accounts, it just leaves a black box where the video was. But the images are important. What is weird is I looked at some other older threads and all the images showed. It seems quite random!

I remember on another site, everyone had used photobucket for images and photobucket closed down and left the site with lots of images that couldn't be viewed. I do like to keep things running smoothly on here though so I haven't given up yet!

Odd that I can’t see them in Firefox on the iPad or iPhone though, just the MacBook. (Anyone think I may be a bit too Apple?). I’ll see if I can ‘report a bug’ on the iPad at the weekend (sorry but this run of shifts is killing me this week) to give them a push. It probably won’t do anything, but they may try factoring it in somewhere.

I think the photo bucket thing was a big issue on the Degu forum. They encouraged photo bucket use. I think it reduced the storage for them or something, so understandable.

Yes sending a bug report might help! (Everybody 🤣 ). I will do as well. (except I have no idea how to do that from an iphone!). I tried the forum software people as well - they blamed the server - server blamed the software. Ultimately it;s some kind of incompatibility between certain images and apple. I do wonder if Apple would like all websites to use webp so it makes people have to buy new ipads! Windows are just as bad - restricting software to newer machines.

"Anyone think I may be a bit too Apple?" :-) Not at all - they are very popular and good machines. I like Windows for the computer and Apple for the phone - not sure why - it's what you get used to I suppose. And I don't get on with tablets for some reason. OH has an ipad and never uses it!

It's interesting that firefox works on the Mac computer though and that does say something - it's a different operating system.

Any Apple device that will run ios 14 onwards can see webp - an iphone 7 and a 2015 ipad could run ios 14. So it would be anything older than 10 years that wouldn't see webp images (if I converted the site to webp which I'm mulling on right now). But then some people do still use old ipads! I use old computers!

I still think this issue must be quite recent. I do use my phone sometimes - and I'm sure I would have noticed if some threads weren't showing photos

In all honesty, I’d be surprised if many people were still using iPads and phones that old. Once Apple don’t support them on updates, they get really glitchy…… it’s a total nightmare. Old PCs don’t seem to have the same issue, although they can get very slow (the ones at work are regularly threatened with being drop-kicked out the window due to their speed, but they’ve been there longer than me, and I’m coming up to 11 years).

I was wondering if it was worth having a sticky advising new members of the issue, on iPhone & iPad, and advising them to either use Firefox/Chrome on MacBook, or a non-Apple device for the time being. I suspect a few folks will find you the way I did, looking for help/inspiration on enclosures, and then finding it frustrating not to be able see the pictures

Exactly and that's why I wanted it sorted out asap! It's a big issue when many people have iphones at least. I've held off on a notice about it temporarily while I'm working out the way forward - just in case the stickie or notice then changes to something else as that would get confusing. Discussing with techies as I may need to set up a test site to try a few things out. I also sent a bug report to Apple and linked the forum! I don't think that will make much difference though somehow :)

I agree I think it's unlikely anyone very much is still using anything older than an iphone 7. It's such an unknown factor with ipads - but I'm aware they stop functioning as well once they stop being supported. But - some people aren't that tech aware and just keep using ipads because they work, even after support.

It's not great. If I can't resolve the jpeg issue for apple devices then it affects everyone who uses apple devices. If I switch to webp then it only affects people with older apple devices - which means less apple users are affected, but it might be someone who only has an old ipad and is short on cash. I don't really want anyone excluded which is why I didn't convert to webp before but it looks like it may have to happen.

I was looking through old photo competitions on my phone and its awful not seeing any photos!

Anyway I'm on with it! In the background ..............

Sorry I'm a bit quiet on here right now. I thought I'd done with a lot of techie updates a couple of months ago, but it seems there is a bit more to do now to solve this image issue :-) So am a bit busy doing a few things and will update later ........

Well I thought I'd done everything but seems there is a bit more ......

It's a two pronged approach at the moment. I'm getting a test site set up to see what happens if changing the images to webp format (don't want to do that directly on here until it's been tested), and am also getting advice about reprocessing the jpegs again. So something will come out in the wash!

There are actually thousands of jpeg photo files on here! Anyway will keep updating when I make some progress.

If need me to help by looking at the test site on all my devices, just let me know

Sorted. I had a very late night! Converted everything to webp images using the inbuilt software option and that has solved the issue. Should have done that in the first place 🤣 I've only had a quick look through a few threads and everything seems fine, but if anyone finds anything odd or missing, just let me know and it can be replaced manually.

It was a difficult one, because it does mean that if someone is using a 9 or 10 year old apple device that won't run ios14, they won't see any images, but even some 9 or 10 year old devices will upgrade to ios14. It needs ios14 or above to view webp images. But the alternative was no apple users able to see images. So it was the best I could do really. I couldn't find an effective solution for reprocessing jpegs in bulk.

The vast majority of people who view the forum. apparently do so on a phone, according to google search console! The next highest number view on a laptop/pc and quite a low number of people view on a tablet which could be apple or another brand. So hopefully it won't affect anyone who uses the site. Any iphones old enough not to run ios14 would probably have issues by now anyway as no longer supported by apple. An iphone 6s and an iphone 7 will run ios14 and those are quite old phones now, from about 2016.

If this affects anyone let me know as there may be a work around for you - an ios upgrade or maybe a different browser.

It was absolutely necessary - it was like someone had stolen the photos! Every time I looked at my phone it was horrible - just pages of blank space.

Big thanks to Readhead Degu for pointing it out because I use a Windows laptop and wouldn't have even noticed - I rarely use my phone to view the site and all the photos on the home page were fine so there was no clue there. The home page photos were already webp ..........
