And a last set of photos. The wheel runs very smoothly and really silently. All you can hear is the patter of little feet on the cork liner. At first Socks tried to start it rolling by climbing up the side a bit as he does with the much heavier Savic Roly. It went into over drive, but he didn't seem to mind a bit of lurching.

Socks stopped, ran around for a few seconds and got back on. He very quickly adapted to the gait needed to stay central to the wheel's spin and ran and ran using good form and clearly loving it. It is made of light, fine wood. There is no middle joint protruding from the front. The height is not adjustable and I'm not sure how one would take it off the stand. The stand consists of layered wood that has no metal screws. With gentle treatment it should last well.
 
I would like to get a cork mat to stop it sliding. At the moment I'm using a silicone shower drain cover (unused and sterile) but it is soft and very chewable, so not very safe. Plastic can cause intestinal blockages if swallowed during chewing. But Socks doesn't chew anymore. However I will replace it as soon as the cork mat arrives.

Yes, the quality is OK. It needs to be treated gently though as the wood is fairly thin, but no problems with chips or splinters.

I think it might be better not to use the silicone mat. I don't think the wheel would move much just on the shelf would it? Or you could tie the wheel stand to the bars behind, so it doesn't move - if you have some sisal string?
 
Socks jumped on his Savic Roly in the playpen last night.

Yes, perhaps I should stop using it. It's not safe. I could also drizzle safe glue underneath to give it a bit of grip.

Thank you! I have ordered a second Songmics to join two together. At the moment I'm using the side pieces length ways with the smaller pieces as feet/floor but there are gaps that need to be filled with cardboard. I've put kitchen towels down the middle. I'll post pictures of the two pens joined when the second one arrives.
 
You mean the silicone mat? You could add a dab of glue under the wheel but then it might be permanently attached to the platform? Although should be able to be pulled off somehow if needed perhaps.

The playpen set up looks amazing. I love how you've turned the mats into tunnels :) Is it just me? I can't see Socks in the playpen!

No, Socks is snoozing in his MCH. This picture is from this morning as the natural light makes his Roly wheel look nice and shiny 😄

I thought the glue might dry and become a bit rubbery, so the friction would resist sliding, but not be stuck to the platform. I used to do that with slippery shoe soles

You could try using Elmer's school glue. It's a safe non toxic one and it wouldn't stick so hard that it couldn't be pulled off again, or eased off with a knife eg :)
 
I've tied it to the bars with some sisal string. That should keep it in place and stop it from sliding towards the rear bars of the cage.

I was trying to operate the phone in one hand and the light in the other. I think it starts to look like a helicopter chase, but we can see some footage of Socks!

So lovely to see Socks. He looks so sweet looking around and using his wheel. You are so thoughtful to use the torch to keep it nice and dark for him. 😊
 
Bicycle light is a great idea :) It really is lovely to see Socks - he’s looking very well.
