Water bottle or bowl?

Water bottle or bowl or both? Albert has 2 classic water bottles. One to use and one spare. I'm not very impressed with them. They both drip and Albert has to work hard to get the water out. My hubby came home yesterday with a couple of these for Albert to try.
I've put one in his cage and kept the bottle in there too. Last night Albert ignored the bottle and used the bowl. They are next to eachother. I'm going to give it a few more days and then remove the bottle if he's still ignoring it. What are everyone thoughts? What does everyone else use for their hamsters?

I got the idea for tealight holder from this YouTuber I follow.

I provide both. It is really nice Albert likes his new water bowl.

If my hams are used to a bottle when they come to me (& most are) I provide a bottle & a bowl, without exception mine have very quickly started to use the bowl, I leave both for a while but when I haven’t seen them using the bottle for a week maybe & I’m sure they’re doing ok with the bowl then I remove the bottle.
It’s been a good few years now I’ve been using bowls & never had any issues, the bowl does need to be an appropriate size & placed where substrate or sand won’t get in though.

I've placed the water bowl on a shelf on the opposite side of the cage away from the sand 😊

There are so many varying opinions on hamster care, and even contradicting ones on youtube videos. It's partly why we have policies and guidelines on various things on the forum, after consultation, and try to keep to authoritative or verified resources on here - but water bottles and bowls is not included in policies and guidelines.

It has become more popular for people to use a bowl these days, without issues. As with everything, care is needed as to the size and shape of the bowl and where it's put. One concern about them is if the water gets contaminated. Unfortunately some people might put them on the substrate and them get substrate, poops or food in them eg. Or they may not replace the water often enough. Or not notice if the bowl is empty if tipped over (although the latter two could apply to bottles too!). So as with everything, it's about taking care with things.

I still use bottles - I use the 75ml ferplast drinky ones which come with a useful bar attachment so they're very easy to take in and out of the cage and the spout is on the inside of the cage, not poking through the bars. They're the only ones I've found that don't drip and are reliable at letting water out IME. Although the classic ones are popular too. There are dangers with bottles too in that they may block or stop letting water out. So a daily check of a water bottle is important too - tapping on the spout to check water is still coming out.

I'm still on the cautious side with this and am quite happy with my bottles! Having them at the right height is important. But I know people are happy using bowls as well. A hamster getting wet is never a good thing but I think that would only happen if they happened to fall into a bowl accidentally. So as with bottles, it comes down to the right place to put them probably. I would think a shelf and not directly on the substrate.

As Erin's video says, both have their pros and cons :)

These are the Feplast drinky ones. I have spares also in case one stopped working. I think it's probably important to always have a bottle around if needed. Eg if you went away overnight.

From what I have seen, most hamsters prefer bowls so you can guarantee Orko prefers his bottle...

There are definitely pros & cons with both but I think people who don’t put the bowl in a sensible place, clean ir & refill it regularly are probably those that would be the same with bottles, not change the water, not notice that it’s not working properly or not clean it thoroughly or frequently, so it’s mostly down to common sense & good hygiene practise really.

Yes it's always very upsetting when you find someone forgot to refill the hamster bottle or it stopped working and the hamster died. They can only live without water for about two days.

So people who use bowls, do you change the water daily? I used to do daily with bottles but tend to go every other day in winter.

It is certainly nice when I see peoples videos of their hamster delicately lapping up water!

I can't imagine me and water bowl refilling without me getting water everywhere! But maybe I'm just used to bottles :)

Every morning I wash Orko's bowl and bottle and refill them with fresh water. I then check if the bottle is working by pressing it against the back of my hand. At first I did struggle to carry the water bowl without spilling some. I have seen some people fill up the water bowl with it in the cage by using a bottle or jug to prevent spilling. I have the bowl on a granite tile so if any water spills no harm is done. :)

Granite tiles are very good for that! I can't imagine carrying water from the kitchen to the hamster cage without spilling the bowl ha ha! Me and carrying water don't go well  So I guess taking a jug to the bowl is sensible.

I put a clean bowl with fresh water in daily, I do spill a bit now & then but no ones been flooded yet!
It might be the rodipet bowls are easier to carry without spilling it maybe but I used to manage 3 or 4 without a problem & I’m not particularly good at not spilling things!

I've moved these posts to their own thread as it's a topic on it's own, as opposed to just ideas for how to fix water bottles on the other thread. It'll be easier to find for people with the same question!

Great idea 👍😊

All our hamsters have a bottle and a bowl. They use both but some prefer one over the other.
I change the water in the bowls daily and have two colour coded plastic measuring jugs for this purpose. I drilled a small hole in the jugs and attached a green cable tie for fresh water and a red cable tie for used water. I only use filtered water and the 75ml classic bottles because they don't leak like the bigger bottles.
I do like those Asda tealight holders and must have a look next time i'm at Asda.

I have two water bottles, one on either side of the cage. I only added a small tea light water bowl in the summer when we had that super hot weather. Hams tends to only drink from one of the water bottles and rarely the bowl. I think he’s just got used to using bottles and to be honest when I check them each day by just tapping my finger on them, they release quite a lot of water 👍

I think Albert's bottle size might be the problem. I've never seen the 75ml classic bottles in any local pet shops. Where do you buy yours from?

After reading everyone's replys I've decided to buy the 75ml classic bottles. One to use and one spare. I'm going to give Albert the choice of both bottle and bowl in his cage just to be on the safe side.

That is the bottle I use for Orko. I got the first one with a bottle stand from Rodipet but the second from Amazon.
