The next heat wave!

I was wondering if it had affected your asthma too 🙁. Actually when I was a child my parents were told to encourage the recorder for the same reasons …, I can still play it by ear 😊

Made some ice lollies….

Too hot and stuffy to sleep in our bedroom tonight - it’s airless - so I will be sleeping downstairs with the back door open too! It was supposed to get cooler tomorrow but I suppose it’s cumulative.

I am always downstairs in this weather, upstairs is awful. Robin just snagged some cucumber and scuttled back to her burrow.

So the downside to thick stone walls is they gradually heat up and then it’s like a storage heater …. Although it’s less hot outside today the house is still like an oven. Helps slightly with all doors and windows open. Higgins sat staring at me through his cage last night as I slept in the living room. Poor thing had lights on a bit late.

He's never seen you sleeping before 🥰🐾

I'm so sorry, that sounds awful. I did see a "heat" map of the continent and it does look a bit worse than the Uk. I don't think I'd survive that without air conditioning! Does air conditioning actually give you fresh air to breathe though?

I got a portable air conditioning unit three years ago and wouldn't be without it now. The room the animals live in is south-east facing and quite exposed at the front of the house so it really does get quite hot in the mornings and then stays hot all day. Back then I was boarding animals so in summer I was often responsible for keeping lots of animals safe.

It vents with a tube of the window which is a bit of a hassle but still worthwhile. In theory it can get the room down to 16C but on really hot days, 21/22C is more realistic which is still very comfortable. It is noisy so it goes off at night. It cost £300 three years ago and you can still get units for a similar price or less.

Obviously AC isn't an option for everyone but I thought I'd put it out there as the way things are going, I think we will have many more of these heatwaves.

Thank you. Do you have a tip for which one or a link please :-) Also as well as cooling the room, does it make the air quality better? That's the issue here with asthma - no air to breathe upstairs.

Mine is an Electriq model from Appliances Direct though the model is discontinued. Electriq is a good brand though.

I'm not sure about air quality. Some models might have additional air filters and they probably reduce humidity a bit.

OH managed to free up the old sash window in the upstairs bedroom so it is now wide open and a nice cool breeze coming in - the room is still quite warm on one side but the breeze has cooled it off mostly :-)

Very refreshing today and fairly windy here. However I read that the long range forecast said the heat wave is coming back in about 10 days time - so we had all better get prepared!

It's a nightmare.

I've just ordered a second fan from Argos just in case. It's a bit weeny at 8" but it has a 12 hour timer and is on a pedestal. It cost £75 😬

We're down to 25C and it is so nice 🥰👍👍👍

Down to 19 degrees in my bedroom now and it's actually cold with the window open!

Yes thank you :-) I'm just contemplating what to do for the next heat wave! I don't really want to get a portable air conditioning unit because apparently that type can be a bit iffy if you're asthmatic due to containing water or something. And for asthmatics it's better to have a split one installed professionally - we're not going to do that as it's too expensive. We should be ok with windows open hopefully, but as I mentioned earlier, I'm thinking of getting a good hepa filter which might help the air quality a bit. It's something I've thought about before.
