Tako the Takoyaki

Thanks a bunch all, its really broke my heart to see Tako last moment, i tried to give him warm water and Critical care incase he was dehydrated and try to hold him with blanket and skin to skin to keep him warm. I though im not late to gave him antibiotics injection but its to late to regret. Even the new wheel still not arrive yet as his recovery present. Im still wondering why both Ponyo and Tako have a cold, is it because the room humidity or is it because of the first vet make him built a lot stress.

Ponyo, you have been very unlucky with health issues with both hamsters. I know it can be hard to find a healthy hamster sometimes, but I do hope you are able to find another fur baby soon. Check on here first for things to look for, for signs of good health.
Yes, Maz. Im looking foward for the new fur baby. Maybe after what i concern already answered, still looking for the cause why both of them got cold. 🥲

Hamsters do have quite sensitive respiratory tracts. They can catch colds and flu from humans or from each other. Or develop lung conditions for other reasons. I can't see that it's anything you've done. If it's too hot or humid in the room it might have led to a hamster being predisposed to getting unwell possibly. If it was a virus then the antibiotics wouldn't have done any good.

But Tako had a bad eye infection didn't he? It's possible the infection got into his blood stream perhaps.

Yes, he did got an eye infection. The first vet said to me, Tako need to be sunbathed for 10 minutes. Is it really helpful to do that for cold and eye infection?

I don't know really - what sort of sunbathing? Under a heat lamp or something? I suspect the eye infection probably spread in the blood system inside.

Big hugs to you - it's so hard for you.

Sun bathing under the direct sun light.

Brief exposure to sunshine could increase vitamin D synthesis. Too much could cause skin cancer, but a bit of sun could be a good thing. Alot of immune issues go back to how the tiny hamsters and their parents are cared for by the breeder. Over use of antibiotics, lack of biosecurity, or conversely, an environment that limits the development of immunity, could result in vulnerability. Perhaps a growth spurt made him more vulnerable to an underlying infection. Immunity is an interesting thing to study.

Thanks a lot for the information Socks mom. Maybe i need suggestion for my room and will make a post in house and enviroment after this.

It's a pleasure. I wish the time was not so sad. If you have hamster rescues in your area, you can sometimes find a nice hamster there. It takes time to grieve. But a new hamster will be a comfort, they are wonderful little animals.

The other issue is that the young hamsters eat some of their mother's poops at the time they are weaned and this boosts the bacteria in their digestive system, which could improve immunity and health in general. If they are taken away from the mother too young, irvif the cage is kept very clean, this might not happen.

All breeder in here mostly seperate the mother and her babies when babies reach age 2 Months. However as i know, there is none ethically bredeer which is make us adopter confused which one is healthy or not.

I have to say I've never heard of a vet suggesting a hamster sunbathes in direct sunlight. Particularly when they sleep all day. It would need to be outside wouldn't it?

Maybe if or when you feel able to get another hamster, you could ask the breeder if they have any adults (ex-breeding hamsters). An adult should be more robust and maybe healthier than a baby.

I'd suggest cleaning everything very thoroughly first though just in case this was something contagious like a staph infection (which Tako might have caught from his mother or at the breeders).

Thanks Daisy, may i asks how would you clean up wooden items such as platform or hides. Because i dont have any oven. Should i throw it away? And also i have a grass tunnel.

Depending on the type of wood, sometimes I pour boiling water over wooden things. This should work well for wood that is quite hard and dense (like most platforms), because bacteria are unlikely to penetrate very far into the wood. But softer types of wood might be more deeply contaminated and these are best thrown away. I would throw away anything grass as well. Grass things can't really be cleaned.

Thats right, Maz.
The time to get sunlight recommended by the vet is in the morning. As we believe that its contain of vitamin D and also can kill any bacteria. However its still an absurb suggestion for me to sunbathes him directly because i learn that hamster is sensitive towards direct sunlight even for just 10 minutes

thanks for the information Daisy,
Should i clean all the items in the cage that he used before sick? Or the items i brought into his emergency cage which i put there when he was sick?

For the grass tunnel (Hays Tunnel) its the best to throw it away. If we are trying to dry it under the direct sunlight, is it still cannot be cleaned?

That's a difficult one - not knowing if he was sick before you moved him to the temporary cage. Can you remember when he started to get sick? eg how long after the cage move?
