That looks like a nice cosy tunnel Sprite!
How rude of someone to interrupt you enjoying your mealworm with a noisy mower!

Sprite is so cute!
You are managing to get lots of lovely photos.

Sprite you are so photogenic I think you should be a model lovr your tunnel great job 🙂

The bedding around that tunnel makes it look like a little volcano. This must have been serious business, I wonder what it leads to?

Great videos of Sprite! Love the stealth walking, really looks like he’s tip toeing. Pleased he got his treat from the monkey nut too, they are a firm favourite here 👍 I also think the picture of him surprised by lawn mower noise is super cute. ☺️

Sprite rolled in his ecco earth. How cute. I have not seen him do that before.

He must really like that, looking cute as always Sprite 😍

I love the way Sprite meerkated before rolling in the ecco earth. I wonder why 🤔

Following on from the thread I created about supporting sand baths. On Saturday the dowels I have ordered are due. I have a big sand bath and a multi chamber dig box that I want to give Sprite. Sprite's current sand and aspen boxes are better suited to a robo. When he rolls in his current sand bath, his little legs hit the shelf that it has.

To add these items is going to mean I have to rearrange his cage and I know this is stressful so I was wondering if anybody has any advice. I believe the changes will be for the best but I know it will still be stressful. I know we are meant to leave the wheel in the same place but I am not sure it will be possible.

I was thinking of waiting until he is in his playpen and then just getting it over with and hoping he gets used to the changes but I am not sure if this is too drastic. Does anybody have any advice for me?

Just to add, I had ordered appropriate things before I adopted Sprite but they were sent to the wrong address and rather then delay the adoption I thought I would work with what I had.

How much are you going to have to rearrange? Will his house be in the same place? I think if you can do it without moving his house, nest & hoard he will probably be fine although it might take him a while to adjust but that’s normal.
It’s always best to leave as much as possible the same but it doesn’t always work out that way. He likes his sand & dig boxes so I think he’ll enjoy the new things which should stop him getting stressed by the change.
I usually put mine in a carrier if I’m doing quite big changes as it usually takes longer than I expect so I can just get on with it without watching to see if they’re ok in the playpen or want to come out but if you think it will be fairly quick to do then he may well be ok in the playpen.

That must have been so frustrating & annoying having his things sent to ther wrong address.

Yes I can leave his MCH in the same place. Thing is, the sand bath is 33cm so there is no way I can just put it in without making arrangements. Then the multi dig box is quite large too. They are both from Getzoo. It would not be possible to fit them in without making arrangements. I also need to move the bedding to get the dowels to touch the bottom of his cage.

Thank you so much for your help. If I do any tidying to his cage I always do it when my partner is home so he can watch Sprite in the playpen. If I put Sprite in the carrier I will do that when my partner is home too in case Sprite is stressed.

It is so frustrating. I ordered a custom made sand bath which was huge and a MCH dig box. I did not realise it would take a whole month to get them and then after all the waiting it went to the wrong address. I fell in love with Sprite seeing his advert and hoped what I had would work out okay. I probably should have waited but felt it would be okay.

Also, if the 33cm sand bath is filled with sand, I assume this is safe and Sprite cannot get stuck in the sand?

How could you have missed the chance to get Sprite!
It’s hardly been an issue him having a sand bath that’s a bit small or doesn’t work perfectly for him, he’s clearly been having a great time in his enclosure so don’t worry about it, I’ve lost count of the times things didn’t work quite how I expected & had to make changes in the cage, you can’t always know until you try.

Aww, thank you. 😍

I added a bit as I did not realise you already read my post. Is it safe to fill the sand bath with sand? I worry it may be too deep.

When I up sized Albert's dig box and sand bath he was fine with it. I think they appreciate the up size so don't get stressed.

I wondered about that as well! How deep to have the sand for a dwarf hamster - but I don't think it's a big issue as they can dig - maybe as long as his head can be out of the top if his feet are at the bottom. That's what I went with.

I wouldn't worry about moving substrate around. The main thing is not to change the layout too much. You mentioned maybe having to move the wheel. I think that would be ok as long as the house stays where it is.

Will you have to lose some other items to fit the new ones in?

By the way it was adorable watching Sprite rolling in his eco earth!

I probably go up to a couple of inches maybe a little more, they’d probably be ok with it a bit deeper but not much or they might struggle a bit to get out!

That you. I will measure the depth of the sand.
