Sprite is not as confident as he was. He is easily spooked now. He does not come out much in the day but when he does he will be easily spooked and hides. Last night I went to bed later hoping to see him but when he knew I was up he soon hid. I left out a whimzee for him and chatted and he did come out to investigate which was sweet. I spoke to him for a few minutes then left so as not to disturb him.

That’s a shame after he’s been so confident & interactive but they do sometimes seem to go through a phase like this after all the initial excitement when they go quiet for a while but do usually come out of it again with a little time so maybe that’s what’s happening with Sprite & he’ll be back to his interactive self before too long.

Thank you. It is a shame as he was super confident and wanted attention all the time. He is being more 'hamster like' now. I can see he is happy because he is very busy at night and really enjoys his wheel.

Not sure if it has to do with confidence though. We are all a bit like that with something new or different. All enthusiastic at first and can't get enough of it until the novelty wears off and we fall back into a more ordinary existence.
I think that Sprite is falling into a normal rythmn now by becoming more, as you say yourself, hamsterlike.
I've seen this happening a few times with hamsters and most typically so with Eddie.

That is interesting. Thank you for sharing that with me. I remember when Eddie wanted your attention a lot when he first arrived too.

And then he disappeared for quite a while, got up late and did his own thing.

More recently, he's become very sociable again asking for attention, out of cage time and cuddles. Usually during the day and late evening.

As soon as Sprite woke up this morning he wanted to go into his playpen. I was not ready, so quickly added some seeds and then popped him in. He is so easy to hold as he never struggles.

It's dangerous for me to watch everyone's videos, ESPECIALLY non-Syrians (it would be so nice to ALSO have a cute ____)

Aw, that is so cute. It is lovely he is wanting attention again. :)

Sprite carefully moved his whimzee into his sand box. :)

I popped Sprite in his playpen as he came out this evening. He seemed stressed and fell in his wheel. I put him back and he hid. I am guessing this video displays stress? I feel so bad. I will not attempt to put him in his playpen for a while.

I'd put him in his playpen when he asks to come out of his cage.
I wouldn't worry about this little fall. Lilly does that all the time.
It could be that you misread his body language and he didn't really want to be out. You soon put him back in his home and there was no harm done so i wouldn't worry.
We can't get it right all the time. We are only humans.

Thank you so much. Yes, I do not think he wanted to be out at all. Hopefully I have not set back his progress.

I don't think so. It's a matter of getting to know them and learning enough about them to get an idea of what they want and when.

Some like Lilly makes things very clear and communicate their needs and others like Bernard keep us guessing. Last time i took Bernard out i realized fairly quickly that he didn't want to be out and felt bad for taking him out. Put him back and all was well again.

It's still early days and you're still getting to know each other. I'm sure Sprite is fine.

Looks like you're still doing a great job with Sprite, he's such a little cutie! Glad to hear you can handle him well, and he looks so content and happy. I think you did a good job recognizing he was done with the playpen, it can be tricky at times and you picked up on it. How exciting is it getting to handle him?
