I looked up 20cm as I understand inches more and that is 7 inches. I feel this will be too small for Snowy. I can see what you mean about wanting her to have more enrichment. I feel a wheel is the most important thing for a hamster so I would have the big wheel and shallow bedding on that side. I know you want her to have more bedding and enrichment but I think it is better to have a wheel they enjoy and less bedding then the other way round. That is just my opinion though. :)

That wheel is fine! 20cm is usually considered equivalent to 8". The standard dwarf wheel used to be a 6.5" silent spinner (before they stopped working properly and became less popular). 8" is a good size for a dwarf hamster :) . Bigger is fine too.

I'm sure Snowy won't mind - they always love wheels with holes in anyway.

Edit - just read she already had it in the playpen so it's familiar to her already. It's a pain if she was slipping in the other one as well.

I guess I could put both wheels in her enclosure for a while and see what she prefers to use when she has the choice

I wouldn't consider it if she was still young and running on her wheel for hours at a time but she's 20 months old now and although very active in short bursts doesn't use her wheel nearly as much as she did.
 
I still think 8" is fine for a dwarf hamster lol. It wasn't that long ago people thought that and 9" wheels were too big for them to manage.
 
That is a good idea. That way you will know which one she likes best. She may even use both! Lol.
 
If she’s happy with the trixie wheel & runs well in it I would just put that in the cage, 20cm is fine for most Russian hams.
 
Our Syrian has a 28cm trixie wheel in the playpen, a 32 cm rodipet wheel in his cage and a 30cm flying saucer in the playpen and he loves them all equally! I think as long as it spins well and is not too small they are happy :) Agree - if the 20cm trixie wheel solves the cage issue I would also use it in the cage.

Turns out I have a spare piece of basswood just long enough to make a shelf along the back of what is currently her beech chips area, that can have stilts on one end and rest on the MCH on the other. That's my DIY job for the next few days!

That was lucky! Make sure you do not hurt your back though as it is sore.

Oh gosh, I can imagine that hurt! I get a sore back after doing my hamsters cage and I do not have an injury!
 
I'd simply swap the wheels over. The 20cm Trixie wheel in the cage and the slippery one in the playground.
 
I had to remove the wheel and beech chips to test the fit of the new shelf and make sure the legs are the right height. If Snowy wakes up while its like this she is going to be very cross!

I probably won't manage to finish everything by this evening. My back is sore and I still need to glue on the legs and then plastikote them. I'll probably put her old wheel back with an inch or so of bedding to tide her over until tomorrow. Not ideal given it's changes two nights in a row but its the best I can manage I think.

It can be a fiddle can’t it. Getting the cage at the right height can help if doing something with a bad back - but you probably know that already.

I’m sure she’ll happily adjust once it’s done.

If the Maxi Duna had a stronger base I'd put some boxes under each end of it so it's a better height and had storage space underneath. Unfortunately I don't trust it not to crack under the weight of all the stuff inside it if it's lifted up!

It should be ok on a solid surface like an Ikea kallax unit often used for detolfs.

I got self assembly units at B&Q and they are surprisingly strong. Two of them or the longer one would give a solid surface for the Maxi Duna and room for storage baskets underneath.
 
I think the poster means if you lift it up, the base might go with the weight of the contents.

Oh i see. To lift it up to move it on top of something?
You could push a board underneath it and then lift it up so it won't collapse but i very doubt that it would.
