I can't change the table the enclosure is on because it's not my table and the foot of my mattress goes underneath it. All I could do would be to put boxes under the enclosure to lift it higher but dont want to do that given the plastic base.

The new shelf is installed :)

I am waiting for her to wake up before I put new bedding on the left hand side. Also need to move her beech chips into the big acrylic box. She isn't that bothered about sand so is fine with just a small sandbath. She prefers coco soil and beech chips for digging in.

Looks great. I'm sure she'll enjoy that.

It's really impressive and clever how you created different levels in a tank style cage.

Poor baby was very confused when she emerged from her burrow and then was even more confused to find her niteangel wheel on the floor. I scattered lots of food out in her enclosure to try and distract her a bit but she was obviously stressed. Eventually she used a backup burrow entrance on the right and must have gone through her buried MCH because she popped out from under the far left end of the new shelf. I've since seen quite a bit of bedding movement by her new shelf so I am glad she's at least using the new space to burrow, hopefully it makes up a bit for the stress...

I don't think she looks that stressed. She is checking everything out, as they do after changes. Occasionally looks a bit confused. She'll soon adjust in a day or two. It can take a couple of weeks for them to fully adjust after a change. I had something similar when I had to rearrange our Syrian's cage to move his new house to a better location, which meant moving his wheel. Which meant having to move a tube as well. He kept looking for the tube entrance for about a week. He took to the wheel straight away, wherever it was, but it also took a couple of weeks for him to get used to the new location of the house.

She just needs some settling in time.

She doesn’t looked stressed to me either, a little confused by the changes maybe but she looks like she’s just checking things out & having a good explore to see what’s been going on & what’s new, I’m sure she’ll be fine.

I agree that Snowy does not look stressed.😀 I know they say not to make changes to a hamsters cage but I have had to make many. I think when we first have a hamster we learn what will work better for them and have to make changes.

You have been so creative with arranging everything. You have a bond already as Snowy feels comfortable to climb into your hand.😍

Every hamster is an individual and I think its inevitable that we have to change stuff to better suit their personality and preferences.

Yeah, she is very trusting of me, she is quite a confident hammy when it comes to people in general. When I was away for a week my partner, who normally doesn't interact with her, was putting food out for her and she was happily taking food out of their fingers :)

Aww what a friendly little hamster. How is Snowy today?

I left a light on very dim for a couple of hours after I went to bed so I could record her with my webcam and she came out twice and seemed ok and was exploring the changed area of her cage a lot, figuring out routes to things. The second time she came out she started using her wheel a bit :) I never see her in the mornings but I imagine she's fine in her burrow. Looks like her seagrass tunnel just to the right of the ramp is her new burrow entrance, at least for now.

(I have noticed from having rats how they seem to navigate more by paths than by spacial awareness, I have many times moved or removed a thing from a rat cage and then observed the rats going to where the thing is supposed to be by one path, finding it isn't there, then trying to get back to that same spot by multiple other paths to see if other routes still lead to the thing. I think hamsters are largely the same, they more remember what route to take between things than what their relative position is. I guess this makes a lot of sense in the wild where they run huge distances between different environments to get what they need.)

Aww, Snowy sounds happy. It is interesting to read what you say about nagivating paths. I imagine they do not rely on their sight like we do.

Just as I said "I never see her in the mornings"
(my voice goes up about an octave whenever I am talking to her!)

Aww she looks so cute & quite curios there 😍
I think I have an odd hamster voice too!

I gave her fresh beech chips in the big box and fresher sand in one of the small boxes yesterday (and added the little lime-green ceramic thing on the left). She popped her head out early afternoon, probably to see what human nonsense I had been up to!

I love how she poked her little head out the bedding and looked around. She is so cute. She looks happy with the changes you made. :)
