Changing the substrate there for something she could burrow into would mean having to change the lid of her MCH anyway.

She gets very stressed at any changes so want to avoid messing with things in multiple steps. It's going to have to wait a little while anyway, I have a back injury so can't get out to get supplies or do any major enclosure changes right now...

Ouch! I am sorry your back hurts. Back injuries are horrible. I hope it gets better soon.

Snowy looks happy to me as my robo digs like she does. :)

Thanks. I have to take the rats to the vets tomorrow as one seems to have a respiratory infection, not ideal timing!

I am sorry to hear your rattie is poorly. I did not know you had rats. Feel free to introduce them in the other pets section. I would love to see them. :)

Well you need to pace things for both of you then x. She will be fine for now. I sometimes think they dig when it’s shallow to see if they can dig out. I’ve had that with sand before.

Off to look at your photos again as not quite sure what you mean about the multi chamber hide. Do mean if she has blocked the entrance you’re worried about ventilation as the lid is plastic? I’m not sure that makes much difference when some people plastikote wood lids anyway. But will look to see what you mean.

I'll make a thread for the rats soon and keep you all updated :)

On a lighter note, Snowy had a serious case of the zoomies during floor time last night. She went through a period of seeming more lethargic a few weeks ago and I thought age was starting to catch up with her but she's not showing her age at the moment!

Yeah, it has one entrance hole on each side. That's fine at the moment as there's plenty of air getting in from the hole on the left hand side but if they're both covered with bedding I'm worried that won't be enough. Maybe I'm just being paranoid though? Making burrows and stopping up the holes is natural behaviour so they probably know what they're doing?

Just edited my post above. I think it will be fine - air gets through substrate. My Syrian has blocked one entrance but not the other. If she blocks both, could you just put a tube running from one entrance through the substrate? Mind you then she’d probably block up the tube!

Oh wow look how happy she is! Could I hear little cute noises she was making?

Oh just seen the video! She really does have the zoomies!

Pretty sure that was just the noise of the wheel and her little paws. She doesn't really make any noises I can hear. (Unless I disturb her and she is annoyed at me, I definitely hear that!)

Snowy is so gorgeous! You should enter her in the photo competition! Although I know it's difficult to get photos of Zoomers!

Sometimes a screenshot from a video makes a nice photo :)

I have been considering what to do about her wheel for a while now. She has been slipping in it a lot lately and frequently half falls out of it. The ridges make it difficult to fit cork to it and I'm not sure that'd solve the problem anyway. I'm not sure if the ridges are the problem or if it's that she just stops suddenly. I think a wheel that has less momentum would be better for her. She has a 20cm plastic trixie wheel in her play area that she loves to use and runs on no problem. I wish they did a 22-25cm version as that'd be ideal (the 28cm version is a little too big for the enclosure). In two minds as to whether to just put the trixie wheel she gets on well with in her enclosure...

I notice some hamsters like a more enclosed wheel as it helps them not to fall out. I can see the dilemma you have. Is it possible to get a larger wheel in her cage if the wheel was on the ground without a platform?

I could, but it'd affect the amount of enrichment and bedding depth I was able to put on that side of the cage. As I was talking about the other day, I was considering putting deep enough bedding for burrowing on the left side of her enclosure instead of the beech chips as she adores making burrows.
