My sweet little guy Wetha passed over night at 2.5 to 3 yrs old and I want to nuke his hides. I have some Niteangel and Mini&Moe wood stuff that is painted. The Niteangel one has some white paint but the other one has a purple candy design on the side. Will that one be safe to bake or how should I sanitize it? I also have one of these - should i just throw that away? I also plan on throwing away the birch logs I have from Small Pet Select. Those are cheap and I rather buy new ones.

Hi there. If the wood hides are painted, I would just wash them personally. In fact I've washed/disinfected unpainted wood houses before and it doesn't do any harm. If it's washable (like paint) you can just use fairy liquid/dishwashing soap - lather it and rinse it off. If there's any unpainted areas (eg wood houses with crevices etc that aren't painted) I just washed those with fairy liquid and water as well, or sprayed pet disinfectant in the crevices as well and rinsed (helps if it's unscented). You can't really bake wood houses like that in case the glue melts.
The flower covered tunnel thing - tricky - you could just bake it. For baking it's usual to do 100 degrees centigrade for about 30 to 45 minutes. It's enough temperature to kill anything, but low enough it won't burn or affect it providing it's no longer than 45 minutes. Or if it's just to remove the hamster's scent, rather than disinfect - you could just pop it in the freezer for a week. That should kill anything and remove any scent.

It helps to rinse them in hot water first, so then when they're baked, they effectively steam which is more effective and stops drying out.
