Raffy (Syrian Hamster)

I sometimes can’t let Davy out - too late / too tired / too old (me not him). Too many excuses!

I do feel guilty 😖.

But it is what it is and I always make sure I leave him his fresh food, hide treats around his cage and maybe put something new in to grab his attention.

I’m sure Raffy will be fine once the mousey bits have gone and he gets back into routine…

And you’ve done your Christmas clean! That is a good thing 😁👍x

It’s a bit early for it really but less to do nearer the time :) . Raffy is not like any other hamster I’ve ever had - he wants to be out desperately every night. For a long time! He does wake up earlier now - about 9.30. So I actually had to leave the room as he was making me feel so guilty!

I’ll just add that I really really don’t like hoovering! Never liked and like it less and less as I get older. The best present I’ve ever had was a robot hoover one year. It’s fine but won’t do a thorough clean round the edges so I had to get the proper hoover out and bend - ugh.

No one else could do it properly (there is hoovering and there is a minor effort at hoovering the visible bits! So have to do it myself),

Pity you do not have lino or wood as then you could get rid of the hoover. ;)

It has been a lot of work & poor Raffy must really be wondering what’s going on, I don’t much like hoovering either but I’m sure Raffy will appreciate your efforts if it means he can come out again.
I had to laugh at the box file, he really does like that, maybe you could give him another empty one in the same spot if it really is getting a bit iffy.

It’s funny how they like going in things they shouldn’t! And even using as a toilet 😁. They never cease to amaze me 💕.

I'd definitely put a new box file or a box in the same spot. All nice and clean and tidy. I wonder what Raffy is going to make of it.

Well I missed the spring clean so yes it will have to do for both!

Im not sure what’s worse to be honest! I don’t like cleaning hard floors either. The floors are stone and very lumpy under the carpet.

Only another hamster mum would understand that 😀

Raffy will appreciate when he can have his free roam, at least he got to play on the sofa, I bet he enjoyed that.

So - I think Raffy was a bit stressed by all the hoovering and things going on in the room. Tonight he didn’t get up. Eventually I lifted his house roof and his nose appeared. And he came out had a stretch and went onto his shelf. I offered him his tube and he looked at me suspiciously and walked off. I waited a bit and he just went back to bed. So he made me wait. Maybe he was remembering last night when he had to go on the sofa.

Eventually he came out again. I offered the tube again and he walked away and didn’t look too happy.

Third time he went in the tube and is now out and about. Cautiously checking everything and sniffing everything. Then found his saucer and was happy.

The file box was too manky so had to go. Instead he has an empty Rice Krispie box on the floor in the same place. Not as dark inside as the black file box holder but I’ll see what happens.

Had to laugh at Raffy making you wait. He soon let you know that he wasn't impressed with all the cleaning.

Yes he made me feel guilty again - almost as bad as a cage clean! How dare I clean the room when he likes it the way it was.

All that hoovering & his manky smells gone! No wonder he wasn’t impressed! I hope he likes his rice krispies box.

Obviously not impressed 😀

He had a good long time out of the cage last night and I'm sure he'll soon mess everything up again and he enjoyed using his saucer. Still did his familiar routes so he'll soon scent mark again :-)

Raffy the night before last. His playpen area under the table is in a different position at the moment - I had to push the coffee table out of the way, up against the TV as we have a piece of furniture plonked in the middle of the room at the moment, which is being sold and waiting for it to be picked up. He seems to like it though as it's near his hidey place behind the TV. He spends most of his time in that area but occasionally does a room circuit and comes back again.

I was too tired to let him out a few nights ago and had to go to bed early, and he showed his disapproval the following night by doing what he knows he's not allowed to do - climb into the restricted area. I heard some noises and caught him before he got over the barrier this time. He can't get over the barrier but there's a slight gap at one end which I block off with box files (and he can't push these over!) What he does instead is squeeze himself behind it and tries to walk up the wall leaning against the side of the box file! But can't do it quietly ha ha. I'm keeping an eye on that every night as one night he got over and into an alcove that isn't very hamster proof - it should be ok unless he can move a heavy toolbox, but even so.

Photos are a bit pixellated as it was quite dim and zoomed in via my phone.
