Pip the Robo

Indeed! He may be quietly sneaking out when I don’t notice. Again it’s the dark nights but also I think he doesn’t like the fabric cover of the clothes dryer blocking his view at one end. I might have to find a new home for it now we have more heating on.

I'd move the clothes dryer out of the way. It's not really cold now and hamsters are nosy.

I did that yesterday. And Pip came out last night :). But then he tends to come out if there is any change to check what's happened! So whether he prefers it or it was just some keeping in charge/checking behaviour I am not sure. I did wonder if he might feel cosier with it there. But maybe not. Now he can see Raffy again. That should be interesting! Anyway he did a bit of running up and down his ladder and jumping in and out of his food bowl last night but seemed a bit scatty. He looks well enough though. He is due for a substrate change or major spot clean soon. I'm still waiting for my substrate to arrive!

When will you set up the camera? I would love to see what Pip gets up to.😍

I forgot to do it last night :) There isn't an ideal place to get a good angle on Pip's cage either as Raffy's cage is in the way.

Here's Pip last night. He came out for some food and a wash in his sand bath two or three times. He's not out as much as he used to be so I suspect that is partly he is keeping cosy and warm in his nest. Also he's maybe still adapting to the clothes drier being moved and being able to see/hear Raffy again.

It's not a great view of his cage or close enough, so you might be better watching full screen or on youtube (click the square or youtube link bottom right of the video) as he is also tiny!

He starts in the front right corner having a nibble of his veg, goes through a tunnel to the back shelf, hops into his egg box hammock and then onto the large hammock at the top. Thinks twice about jumping off the large hammock onto his main shelf, but does. Goes to his sand bath back left, hops in his food bowl front left, then down the ladder. Repeated this a few times in the night!

The top hammock was never intended for use - it was supposed to be up near the top, partly to provide overhead cover and partly just in case he managed to climb onto the roof and fell. However I'm aware he uses it! He uses the egg box hammock as a step up to it. He can't fall from it as it's wedged through the bars front and back and one end is over his main shelf (not very high). The other end is over his egg box hammock but he doesn't attempt to get out of it that way (only into it). Sensibly! The egg box hammock moves and the main shelf doesn't.

Afraid it's not that easy to see but you can see his eyes glowing with the infra red!

Lovely to see him out & about, made me laugh seeing him up in that big hammock, he looks like he’s really enjoying himself, looks like a great set up for him too.

He's so quick getting into that hammock for a hamster that small!

Small and wiry lol! I first knew he was going up into the hammock quite early on as there was food in it! His egg box hammock is next to his low back shelf so he hops from the shelf into the egg box hammock and basically uses the egg box as a step up to the large one. Must be about a 2” height gap between the two but I think he pulls the front of the fleece hammock down. They overlap so he can’t really fall, but if he did there is nothing hard to fall on under there.

In fact the hammock was to cover the higher areas and the wood ramp just in case he ever managed to monkey bar across the roof and fall. So the fleece hammock wasn’t intended for use but he doesn’t chew it so I left things as they were! It is always full of food lol! He seems to like it up there and clearly snacks up there.

I still think he is very small when I see pictures of other robos on here. He’s not as broad as Bernard either. He still looks baby Robo size to me even though he’s filled out a bit.

I do think Robos are good communicators though - telling you when something needs doing.

Aww cute little Pip! It is lovely seeing him about. He went down his ramp very elegantly.

He went down it very fast!

So later this evening I decided to clean up Pip's main shelf a bit. The hemp mat gets covered in food and it spills out through the bars. It was badly in need of a sort out. So cleaned that up, replaced the hemp mat and changed the sand in the sand bath. Then decided to put some of the new sprays in his cage. Clearly this woke Pip up who came out to see what I was doing and was out for quite a while so I got quite a few videos of him. Firstly he checked out the sand bath and didn't seem too impressed - there was a bit more sand in it than before and I think he didn't approve of that - it lowered the height to the roof! So I might need to take some sand out again. He was interested in the new spray and nibbled and investigated but I then realised it was blocking where he jumps off the shelf onto something else and he was not impressed with that either (I've now moved it to the front of the cage next to the small front shelf where it doesn't block a route).

He stayed out for quite a while and then went to have quite a long wash and scratch under his rainbow bridge. Sat and listened to me for a while too so I asked him if he wanted to sniff my hand and put that nearish to him. He was very brave and looked like he wanted to investigate but then ran away again! Just a short clip for now. After this he actually flew out of his wheel and landed upside down - so I think he was a bit flustered by the hand in the cage!

It's a bit dimly lit in that corner of the room

Oh bless! He is so gorgeous 😍 He really did want to investigate your hand, maybe next time Pip.

Another short clip of him having a very thorough clean and scratch. We had quite a long chat and he sat looking at me for a while when talking to him. This was just before he was brave enough to sniff my hand :)

I think he looks like a little chicken when he's grooming his tummy :)

Aw he is sooo cute! His tiny cup is so sweet. Does he eat out of it?

Eating his veg :) You can see him better at the end of the video without bars. It's very short but all just Pip eating his veg
