Pip the Robo

Considering I hardly ever see Pip - he has clearly been up to things at night! Last night when I went to put his veg out I saw his cardboard tunnel had fallen down. It was tied to the bars with sisal string with each end resting on a shelf (ie it's a route from the front to the back shelf). I thought oh dear I hope it didn't scare him or hurt him. It didn't fall far as his house roof is underneath. Just a few inches. So I took out the tunnel and was gobsmacked to see not a single shred of sisal string left! The holes were still there but no string. Now the string was tied on the outside of the cage. Pushed through the side of the tunnel and back out of the tunnel again about 1cm further on through two holes at each end and then tied on the outside.

No sisal string to be seen! Nothing on the outside of the cage, not even a scrap of it on the inside. I assume he decided to chew the bits showing through the inside and it has fallen down outside the cage. I couldn't see anything that had fallen down - but then that end of the cage is in a dark corner close to a cupboard so it's hard to get down and see properly - but certainly nothing visible on the floor! It may have fallen under the shelf - I have yet to investigate properly.

So I got some more sisal string and fixed it back in the cage which was a bit fiddly and I knocked over a couple of things while trying to do it. This of course brought Pip out to see what was going on. He looked a bit pensive so I told him I have fixed it now. So I hope he is happy!

I must check my nightcam to see what he's been up to! Haven't checked it for ages.

I wonder what Pip was doing with the string. It must have taken him ages to move it all! I love how he came out to check what you were doing. :)

I think he probably chewed it because it was there to chew :). One reason it's important to use safe string!

The tube needs changing anyway. It's his second one. He clearly pees in them and it's quite stained, but it was late last night and I couldn't find another one. So another day.

I wonder if he hid the string with his spoons 🤔

First spoons and now string... Why have I got the A-Team theme tune going through my head 🎶 I love it when a plan comes together 🤣

Ha ha! Yes he had a spoon this morning with a bit of porridge - I wonder if it will still be there tonight. He is definitely due a clean out so I may find all sorts hoarded! The string has me slightly flummoxed. I can't find any trace of the long bits tied to the outside of the cage. You would think, if bitten through, they would just fall down outside the cage or be partly still attached - but not a trace! I've had a good look down the side and partly under the shelf and can't see anything! They probably are there. There is all sorts stored and piled up on the shelf so they may have fallen into something but that would be quite an angle! I think I'm going to have to investigate quite soon.

I’m looking forward to hearing what you find when you do a clean out!
It reminds me of when I set up Zen’s cage & tied a corner hammock to the bars leaving the long ends of string handing outside & she would sit there for ages trying to catch them & pull them in so maybe he did something similar.

I think I may know. Pip may have used the string to wrap around his spoons then tied them securely to stop you taking them.

Update on Pip. There isn't one ha ha. He remains extremely elusive and not to be seen. I think I've seen him once or twice near his food bowl since Christmas - if I've put the food out a bit late. Of course if I rearranged the room so his cage is where the TV is I might notice him sneaking out now and then. I would happily do that but it wouldn't be allowed :)

Unfortunately the nightcam hasn't been working. We changed internet a few weeks ago and because I hadn't updated the settings on the camera it hasn't been connecting.

Pip will be out when I need to do his cage though - which is due for a spring clean!

Surprised I expect! But he usually gets more interactive for a while afterwards. I think he is waiting for warmer weather really.

I shall try that tonight? He had porridge not long ago but didn't see him eat it.

Must admit I am looking forward to seeing what I find at the bottom of his cage. But no missing spoons at the moment.

I am also looking forward to hearing about what you will find and also what Pip will do.

I had planned to do a half cage clean for Pip today (the half with the house in) it was starting to get slightly whiffy like pee. He must have read my mind because just before 5pm he was out and about in his cage on his shelf, so it was quite easy to get him out. He took a crock treat from my fingers, and I held a snooze cube on his ladder for him to walk into. He ran away along his shelf at first and then came back to investigate and walked into the snooze cube. He must be about 20 months old now so maybe he's less bothered by things.

Next thing was to let him walk from the snooze cube into a small taming box while I set the playpen up. At first he was just running around in the playpen - not interested in going to sleep in a hide anywhere, even though I'd put some nesting material down. I thought he might need something else to do so put some food out for him. He had a nibble of that but still just explored things. Went off to start on his cage but I kept popping back to see how he was getting on.

This is the third time he's met the flying saucer and doesn't get it. So I put my only spare wheel in there, which is the Carolina Storm Wheel that Raffy used to have. Well that kept him interested! He enjoyed that! But it was a bit slippery for him. So I took it out and put the flying saucer where it had been and showed him it spun but he wasn't interested. Went off to do a bit more of the cage, came back and found this!

He seemed to wait till I was out of the room and had a go. He was on and off it quite a lot and seemed to be really enjoying it!

Aw Pip! It is so lovely to see him. He is so cute. I see he was okay about you seeing him on the flying saucer in the end. Hehe.

He is a very clean little boy! The only damp smelly substrate was in one compartment of his house where his litter tray is and he'd kept adding substrate on top of it. The whole of the rest of the right side of his cage was clean - even under the house. I spot cleaned some older substrate out though and added quite a bit of new as it had gone a bit flat. I was itching to do the left side of the cage as his shelf is a big mess - but I'm leaving that for another time - so one half isn't messed with.

Here he is when he first went in the playpen - not quite sure what to do with himself but he soon settled down
