Pip the Robo

No there was nothing in his bedding, I meant thrown out with human food debris lol. It happens with teaspoons I think - especially very small ones (which are actually coffee spoons I think). On second thoughts, maybe it's a bit warm for porridge!

He can eat it once its cold. I only gave it to Orko once it was cold. 🙂

I haven't tried those, unless they're in his mix. Thank you for the tip. I've just been watching the nightcam from last night. He ran in his wheel a lot as usual. Did a bit more exploring. He really likes the upturned sputnik house in the middle. Nugget used to like that too. It's like an open tent. Apart from the usual eating and drinking in between wheel running and checking out the odd thing he seemed to be just checking out his environment. Until - early hours I saw him climb the bars at the back of the cage right to the top - and then drop. He couldn't hurt himself as there's just a lot of substrate in that area. But that suggests to me he is not finding the cage big enough or enough to do.

So I'd better get cracking with sorting his cage out again. But I think it will take me a few days because as well as all the disinfecting, I need to work out a lowered (or highered) layout for him. I noticed he's not as good as climbing onto/into things any more now he's older. Eg getting into his food bowl. So I'd been thinking of all lower level and not shelves any more. However the Plaza is tall and the shelves and egg box hammock etc were for protection if he climbed (and he didn't bar climb in the Plaza but maybe because of the shelves).

So it's going to take some working out so he has enough enrichment and space but it's safe for an older robo.

I've got a few video clips from last night but haven't processed them yet.

I have to say that Savic rolly wheel seems ok - it seems quiet and spins fine. I measured it and it's 9" at the front (probably 8" to 8.5" at the back). I have three of those! They came with each plaza cage.

It was lovely to see so much of Pip in the clips, out and about and exploring. Having done all the hard work of moving him out, it does seem like the best time to make adjustments to his cage now that he is older. It may be that it takes a few days to be back in his good books but don’t rush the work because of that.

Here are some clips from the nightcam last night. The first one is a couple of minutes and him exploring. There were linseeds on top of the hay house.

The second two are very short. One about 40 seconds and the last about 17 seconds. The last one is seemingly after getting bored with running in the wheel (which he did a lot of) and checking things out and looking for a way out. He couldn't hurt himself but makes me consider how to adapt his set up in the plaza if I want things more low level.

He didn't show any interest in the flying saucer all night, when I scanned through, other than to sniff it. So either he's forgotten what to do with it since his last playpen time, or just prefers the wheel. So I'll probably take it out and put it back in the playpen and put something else there.

I hope nobody sees any bugs go into the cage this time! But don't be afraid to tell me if you do!

He is having a good explore there, it’s lovely to watch him.
He’s pretty good at climbing those bars too! I guess being used to having so much more space & more to do plus having a different enviroment to explore it’s not surprising he’s doing that.
He does still look very agile, have you thought about how you’re going to adjust things in the Plaza yet or still mulling it over? Could you put deeper bedding in to reduce the height or is it more about getting up onto shelves & things?

He sort of looks agile but also seems to have a bit of difficulty with climbing pushing up with back legs. If you notice it wasn't that easy getting into his food bowl and similar trying to climb the side of the sand bath hay house thing yesterday.

I already had 25cm of bedding in the Plaza before and the front door limits how deep it can go while still accessing things through the door - and there was still a lot of space above it, which is why he had quite a few shelves and a couple of hammocks to break any falls if he did happen to get up to the roof and monkey bar. But now he's older I'm thinking of no shelves and having it more one level as I think he might start falling - so it's taking some working out. If there were no shelves he might climb the bars again and it's a taller cage (or he might just be climbing the bars because this cage is smaller and he's bored).

So yes probably deep bedding again and low level climbing things and something to block the bars. Still working it out.

Perhaps he would find it easier if you put his food in a little pile without any bowl. Do you think he would be agile enough if you scatter fed him?

It was so lovely to watch the videos. He really is so cute. I did not see any moths at all. :)

Oh good! Yes I was wondering about a shallow plate type dish like Raffy has. I gave up scatter feeding with Pip as the cage just ended up full of food. I thought it would be nice to have his familiar bowl but will look at another option.

As Pip is in the other room I can watch him on my phone via the hamstercam while in the living room. He was out on his wheel so I went in to say hello and feed him. He is not happy with me, gave me an untrusting look and went in his shoebox house. I took some strawberry porridge as a treat on a teaspoon but that didn’t bring him out. I’m sure he’ll need a few days after the upheaval and change of environment.

Aw, I am sure he will forgive you soon. Hopefully, he ate the porridge later.

Thank you Rainbow. I do hope so.

It has been quite an upheaval for him, I hope he settles back down soon, lots of treats & he’ll forgive you!

It has and a bit out of the blue poor Pip. Like moving to a new home almost. He doesn't seem stressed in the cage - maybe a bit bored - but is definitely avoiding me and doesn't trust me right now.

It’s not nice when you have to do things you know might upset them but give it time & I’m sure he’ll come round.

It is slow going getting everything disinfected. All the ceramic, resin and plastic things are done and I finished doing all the cage bars and bits and pieces today. Just doing a bit at a time as there is rather a lot. I’ve given his labyrinth house a good scrub with soapy water and that’s drying out. I have the wood shelves to do next but might leave that till tomorrow. It’s probably best Pip settles a bit anyway before another change. And by the time I move him back he’ll have some bedding he’s scent marked that I can move over.

I’m going to do the set up differently anyway in the Plaza and put Perspex inside the bars and raise everything and lose the shelves. But will keep the layout the same mostly with his house on the left etc. And his house roof will be a platform plus I have another one his rock formation was standing on. And thinking about another low platform instead of the shelves. That’s always tricky with a sloping cage base …….You almost need a degree in mechanical engineering to work out how much to cut off two legs and what angle cut - so two of the legs rest on the sloping part.

I am off resin items. The rock formation was not easy to clean and get in all the little crevices! But a soapy sponge followed by pet disinfectant got me there eventually.

You are doing a great job with disinfecting everything. It sounded really hard cleaning the rock formation!

It really is a big job having to do all that & you’re doing well to have got so far already.
Those resin things or anything with crevices can be a pain but I usually just soak them in disinfectant & give them a scrub with a toothbrush if it’s needed.
Doing the platform legs that way sounds very tricky! I do it the easy way & just place the legs further in underneath so I can push the platform up against the sides without the legs getting in the way.
Good point about the substrate having his scent by the time he moves back, I’m sure that will help him settle back in quicker.
