So sorry Snowy fell in her water. I hope she dried off quickly. Maybe she would be better with a bottle if she is a bit uncoordinated.

I'm nervous about using water bottles with hamsters. I've had water bottles stop working for my rats before. It's not so bad with them because I can give them two bottles and they drink enough that it's obvious if one stops working. With a hamster I worry about them not being able to get water and it being hard to tell because of how little they drink. The tealight candle holders I got are really small so she shouldn't be able to do anything more than get a paw wet if she does stumble into it.

Paŭ was out while I was up early again and I went over and gently talked to him. I put my finger against the side of his enclosure and he came over briefly to investigate before heading back to his house. He emerged again a couple of minutes later so don't think he was too scared. I'll be leaving him alone for another 24 hours aside from changing his water and giving him food. Won't be attempting any more interaction than this for a few days at least.

Looks like he's made himself a nice cosy little hole to sleep in. I am glad he'll be warm and comfy :)

The grasshopper was still there this morning so I am trying one of the other insects out of the jar. If he doesn't like any of them I'll have to find another protein source.

Two of my rats will happily eat grasshoppers and the other one is like 'eww, get that away from me'!

I bought the Little One insects and Orko will not eat any, even the mealworms. He happily eats other mealworms though.

Luckily two of your rats will enjoy any leftovers. :)

Oh dear! Well, as you say if nothing takes his fancy, Ivy and Luna will be happy to help :)

I’ve only had one ham who would even consider grass hoppers! Most seem to quite like mealworms but not all of them, I find chicken is usually popular with them all if you need an alternative protein source.

I think the idea that they eat insects in the wild is a theory, but maybe hamsters would rather eat something else lol - and only eat insects in the wild out of desperation ha ha.

He is absolutely adorable and looks to be doing very well.

I guess live insects might be much more appealing to hamsters than dried ones. (The bag of dried grasshoppers for birds that I occasionally give my rats smells rank!)

I sometimes wonder if domesticated hamsters are too domesticated :-) Heard many stories of a hamster just ignoring live bugs in the cage! You think they would eat them but they just seem to ignore them. Although I did see a funny video of a dwarf hamster chasing a live cricket and eating it.

I’ve seen quite a few videos of hams catching live insects but it probably depends on the type of insect, you may well be right though & domesticated could be a bit too lazy to catch their own!

Why chase insect when human provides a constant supply of delicious seeds!

Some unedited Paŭ footage from early this morning. He sure loves that little spot behind his tray of beech chips!

It's a cosy place to sit and have a wash and feel safe behind a wall :-) But partly what I was mentioning earlier - he sticks to the side of the cage to get there. Robos do like lots of stuff to feel secure as they move around the cage and I think some hides or similar in the open space in front of the wheel would help him enjoy using all that space more - they like to dive under things - especially when they can't dig underground in a particular area.

I have already made a small change today, adding something just to the right of the wheel which clutters that space up a bit better, hopefully that helps :)

That sounds good :) I was thinking more the open space in the middle :) The first robo I had, I read a bit about how they like multiple things on the cage floor as they are more scared than most species of open space around or above them - which is partly why they tunnel places.

This was my first set up for our robo. Even with all that stuff in the cage - he didn't walk across the cage - he would tunnel between the hides then pop out and climb on top of one if there was food there. It was a bit small so I upgraded him eventually.

All the stuff I read said robos need loads of floor toys to dive under when moving around the cage, and a very busy cage. Pau seems very happy, but thought he may enjoy the sand area more if there was more clutter!

It was either Wood Green or Blue cross had a very good video showing the amount of stuff and overhead cover for robos - can't find the video now.
