Just saw Otto and his left eye was closed again which may well open after he's had a wash. So the second course of antibiotics isn't making any difference meaning it's not an infection. It made sense to try though.

I managed to get an appointment with my regular vet on Friday. I think it may be a good idea to sedate Otto to get a good look at his eye and to check his teeth to rule out a dental problem which is something the two previous vets have suggested as well as the next course of action.
He has no issues chewing and his front teeth look fine but i don't know what his back teeth are like.

If no cause can be found and he has a dodgy eye for whatever reason, so be it. Maybe they can prescribe prn hydrating eye drops.
I don't think that he's in pain and he hamsters about as per normal.

That sounds a good idea. It makes sense to check his teeth. I was told to try to bathe my late rabbits eye with chamomile tea when it was sore but I have no idea if that is safe for hamsters. (He would not let me do it anyway)

Would the sedation just be for an xray then? Maybe they will take a bit longer to start working - but if you're sure they're not doing anything.

His eye is open now. I don't think that he'd need an xray but it is difficult to check the eye and teeth of a wriggly hamster properly.
Saying that, my regular vet seems to manage.
I need her opinion anyway but she was booked when i needed to see a vet so she hasn't met Otto yet.
I'm happy to go along with whatever she thinks is best. She may well suggest to leave the eye alone as it does open eventually and Otto is not bothered by it.

So adorable he was sitting right next to you. Hope the appt goes well.

It would help to know what it is though I guess - so you know what to expect or if anything needs doing. I'm sure she'll sort something and it would only be a light whiff of anaesthetic probably. I would also want to know what it is.

An eye issue can become serious very quickly so i'd rather be prepared.

Otto is full of beans tonight.

Ha, i always think of Rory when i say beans. He absolutely hated them and never touched a bean in his life.

Hope it goes well at the vets for Otto, it is better to know what’s going on & be prepared but hopefully it isn’t anything too serious.

Vet visit went well. Otto saw my regular vet who could not see any signs of infection, abcess or tumor. His left eye does look a little different from his right eye so there is some kind of irregularity which doesn't seem to bother him. She's going to do more research and get back to me.

That’s good news that it isn’t any of those more serious issues, hopefully it’s just a more minor issue that might need a bit of management but won’t be a real problem for him.

Yes, it could be a birth defect due to poor breeding which wouldn't surprise me at all.

Vet checked his teeth using dental instruments and couldn't see any obvious issues. For a proper check up of his molars he'd need a little sedation but she's going to get back to me.

I like the fact that she doesn't try to commit herself to a diagnosis and prefers to do more research first.

Your vet sounds really good. It is so reassuring to have a vet you can trust.

Good to hear your vet doesn’t think it’s a tumour or abscess. I guess as long as it’s not bothering Otto and not likely to become infected these are all good signs. Your vet sounds very thorough and nice 😊

Your vet does sound thorough and reassuring. Could the eye possibly be damage from previous injury - a fight or accident perhaps?

Yes, it could be an old injury. He also has what looks like a bit of scar tissue on his back.
It may not be possible to find out what exactly is the matter with his eye because i don't know his history.
Vet is looking into the medical side of it to see if there are any ailments with this kind of symptoms.

How old is Otto?
