My hamster ginger

Hello beautiful Ginger. Sounds like he loves his wheel! How long has he actually been with you now?

Ok so he's had a while to settle in now then. He's probably ready for out of cage time and some hand taming and socialising :-) Do you have a playpen or hamsterproof area? Or a dry bathtub initially? And also maybe work out what to use as a "taxi" for getting him out. I use a large rat tube. The pawhut is open at the top so lowering a tube in would seem less threatening then a hand coming from above. You could hold it at a slight angle so he could walk in. If he's a bit cautious, a bit of cucumber at your end helps tempt them in. It's all in the taming guide anyway :-)

He's so lovely, it puts you at ease doesn't it when you catch a glimpse of them in the night. I was going to go with red light! But it meant I missed so much 🥰 so I went with a night camera that records every movement, I know what time he gets up, what he does and when he goes back to bed. I find it so useful. Looking forward to hearing more about Gingers adventures 🥰💕💓💖 Ness

I agree it's reassuring to know they are ok :-) I also use a nightcam/hamstercam :-) Maybe you could ask for one for Christmas :-) My first one was a requested Christmas present. They have come down in price now though. Which one did you get at @Vanessa? I have a Eufy one and it's great.

Basically it just records constantly (has a small sd card in it) but only records movement - so you can see when the hamster was out and about as the movement parts show in a different colour. It's also recording live and connects to wifi so you can sit in bed and watch him on your phone :-) Then scan the footage next day as well. And record clips on your phone to keep as videos.

At the moment our camera in Teddy's enclosure is a AOQEE outdoor security camera 2k it's purely because we have a lot of cameras around because of the chickens and we like looking for unusual birds. It's a good camera, does the job 🥰 it's not expensive either 🥰💗💞💕💓 Ness

This is the one I have - picture is very clear. There are quite a few to choose from these days though, but I'd avoid one that has a cloud subscription. If you choose one with an sd card then no need for a cloud subscription :-)

Eufy

It does come with a bracket to permanently fix it to a wall or similar, but we just stand it on a cupboard opposite the cage, on some books to get it the right height!

An example from it - my last Robo zooming at night :-)

We have just been using a time lapse all night and checking it in the morning since we don't have a WiFi camera right now but we will still look into getting the one Vanessa1 has which is a good price too. Otherwise I just check on him before I go to bed and he is usually awake by then

We are working on getting a playpen, haven't had much time out of the cage but we are working on either getting the playpen or using a dry bathtub and we will probably use a tube or a cup to get him out of the cage.
I've definitely used a dry bathtub- closed the drain, put down a towel, and filled with items to explore, or the wheel, dig boxes, etc. Sometimes I'll even just make sure there are no holes to escape into in a room and follow my Syrian around while she explores for a bit.
