My Name is Amy, I moved to Germany many years ago, but I am still very homesick.
Recently my cat died of old age, I decided to get a hamster since I used to keep them years ago.
Yesterday Nibbles moved in 😍 he is a black Syrien and very friendly for saying he has just moved in. He is 12 weeks old and full of energy 😄

Thank you 🙏 yes he’s very sweet. And he really has helped with my griefing. I was so upset and at the same time had an awful flue. Today Nibbles has been very quite he loves digging into his bedding. I suppose yesterday was so exiting and a bit exhausting. He spent ages in his wheel once he sussed it out. And he was very hungry after all his rearranging of his interior 🙄 he didn’t appreciate my decorating skills. I will show more of him once he has completely settled in. I will add a photo of his house.

Aw, yes they don't like people messing and change :-) It can take a couple of weeks for them to fully adjust and settle in - but he has a lovely environment. I'm sure he'll be more confident once he's had the settling in time. Glad he loves his wheel :-)

I though my setup was quite good but he definitely had other ideas 😄 I bought a wooden tunnel the ones you place at the front of the house under the bedding. He tried it out but didn’t like it and it was a bit tight fir him. The sand bath is also quite small, I changed it into a bowl. Then I realised (as he diggs loads of tunnels) that platforms would be ideal, so I have ordered three. I will then have the whole house filled with deep bedding instead of a slope. I suppose every hamster is different so I will adjust to make him happier. He doesn’t like the mealworms (neither do I 😳) but maybe he will get used to them. I guess he’s never had them before. He’s seems very happy and I am looking forward to interacting with him once he’s settled in 🫶

Yes they told me to wait whee I bought him. There were no rescues where I live. I am unsure about his wheel: it’s already rather dirty from his sweaty paws (he seems to be training for the olympics) when should I clean it? Should I wait a few more days? He hasn’t peed in it, as he only does that in his sand bath. But he seems to have rather sweaty little paws 😅

He probably has pee'd in it :-) Hamsters can't get sweaty paws, as they can't sweat :-) I tend to just give it a wipe out now and then rather than a full wash and then at some point give it a full wash, but not at the same time as cleaning anything else.

Ok I will give it a wipe out tomorrow. My vet told me hamsters only sweat over their paws… that’s why I assumed it was that 😅

Ah that's interesting! I didn't know that :-)

I may have got it wrong…. Whatever it is it’s sticky 😳 he just went so crazy that he flew out of the wheel. He certainly has a lot of energy

Good morning ☺️ you were right, my vet called last night to ask if Nibbles and I are getting on alright. I asked him about the sweaty paws, he laughed and told me hamsters don’t sweat as they have no glands. What he meant was that some hamsters have more oily fur than others, but the stickiness in the wheel is most likely due to pee. He said they pee in nature whilst moving, in order to mark their territory. This peeing in the wheel is called rocket peeing 😅 so sorry for me for getting it wrong, you are absolutely correct 😅 my vet added: I can see the slightly disgusted look on your face Amy, don’t worry you can wash it off, get used to it 😂 he will do it again

Ha ha rocket peeing - I like that.

Sounds awful doesn’t it 😂 Nibbles is still awake although it’s quite bright the suns coming up. He’s just eating his breakfast, he loves the food I bought. I also gave him his first ever tiny bits of baby carrots. Looks like he’s starting to feel homely. I am off to work now, but reassured that he seems happy
