Hello everyone. I have created my own thread to avoid cluttering the main page! I have 3 hamsters currently, Teddy and Gus Gus (both males) as well as Ree my adopted female hamster.

Gus Gus and Teddy only emerges when it’s very dark but Ree is much more active and she can be seen out during evening time! She’s also much more interested in her sprays and will take a bite of it here and there whereas the boys totally ignore their sprays except for the flaxseed sprays 🤣

Teddy is the burrower which creates a headache for me because I have to destroy his burrow every week to search for the pee spots 😭

Anyone has any tips on toilet training a hamster who only burrows?

Aw, hamster clutter is precious 💕 Teddy is so cute 😍 Yes, the males do seem to like to sleep. Cleaning day can be a bit disruptive, but they seem to cope once settled in and it is essential. Ree sounds like a nice outgoing girl. It's great that you have the combination of different personalities 🥰

Such a beautiful photo, what a little sweetie 🥰 I'm afraid I have the same situation with my Teddy he tends to do everything in the same area, although I've tried to get him toilet trained elsewhere to make cleaning easy. Some people say they have success with a toilet but not me I'm afraid! It depends on your hamster I feel 🐹 l will keep trying to train him , but I think he's stuck in his ways. I really hope it works for you 🥰💕💞 Ness

Such a gorgeous photo - he looks so sweet! And great your hamsters have their own thread so we can follow :-)

It is difficult spot cleaning pee if they live underground and burrow. I think they are too lazy to decide to come up top and use a toilet when they are already down there. I wonder if some kind of underground hide would encourage them to use that as a toilet (or even a sleeping area?)

@Vanessa1 @Maz once they get into a habit it’ll be difficult to change. But when he’s out for the night he does pee in his sand so I really think it’s because he won’t come out in the day. He doesn’t even come out to drink water 😱

I saw an idea to put a covered toilet underground so I’m going to try that. Hopefully he finds it and uses it!

Indeed he looks very sweet sleeping, I’m so glad I can see him from the window he’s created otherwise he would really be a ghost hamster! Taming him is also difficult because of his underground preference ❤️

It's very rare for teddy to come out during the day, although he did get in a routine of coming out around breakfast time for a drink but it's not every day 🥰 All you can do is have a go with the underground toilet... He might love it 🥰 I really hope it works! if it does I'll try it with teddy 🥰💞💕 Ness

I also would like to share a photo of Gus in his multichamber! He has really made good use of it, he has a toilet, a room where he stores his food and the small room he is currently in, is his bedroom!

I lift his lid every evening to clean the toilet but I make sure to give him a treat too so he’s ok with me. His skirt is getting long too so I take this time to brush my fingers through his fur. I didn’t realise his skirt had grown so long that I had to cut a mat out a few days ago 😖 So now I have to really keep on top of his fur maintenance

So funny he decided to sleep in the smallest room - it must feel cosy and safe. :-) One of mine did that as well. Most of them slept in the larger room. It's great he is using it.
