Hello ,
I took biscuit to the vet on Friday as she has been losing some fur on her back. The vet took a sample of fur and had a look under the microscope but didn’t see any mites, although she said that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have them . She told me to try Xeno 50 mini 1 pipette every two weeks twice and then once a month . She thought it would be to traumatic to do a skin scraping to determine cause but said this should kill any mites or skin infection . I have just applied a pipette and she bolted but I did rub it into her back on the skin . Do you think this is ok ? To anyone that may have used it . She is 215g by the way so that’s why she is having a full dose .
Thank you

Yes, Socks weighed 170g when he got Xeno last year. I've used Beaphar from P@H as well after the course of Xeno. He hated it as well and it was quite messy, but so was the over the counter one I bought. He still has thinning fur, but some has grown back so it's difficult to know how well it worked. I hope it works for Biscuit, she is so sweet🙏

Thank you . Did it take long to work ? Also did you do a full cage clean ? I am reluctant as it could also be a skin infection or ringworm and the cleaning would stress her so much . She was so scared after the vet but she came out last night to chew het beloved log . How is socks now ?hopefully better now !

Socks is about 18 months old. I didn't do a full clean, just the usual removing old poops and boarded food from his nest area. I think ringworm has its own unique pattern and vets can diagnose it and would give you antifungal fof it. I assumed the mites would stay on Socks and be killed by the medication, but there is some sense in changing the bedding. I have done a few total changes over the past year to upgrade the bedding. Sweet, Biscuit coming out for her log. Syrians are very sociable animals, very affectionate and interactive. The only thing is, at least with Socks, he is a night owl and comes out at 3am. We managed a few cuddles and a bit of playpen time and then I collapsed back into bed.

I think it's usual not to see any improvement until some time after the second treatment :-) There is also a thought these days that demodex mites can only survive on the hamster, and there isn't a need to do a full cage clean.

If they were visible mites in the cage, eg from hay (different type of mite) then it would need a full cage clean and disinfection. This is why we freeze food, hay etc to avoid things like that :)

I think on balance, as stress can make mites worse, it would be better to just carry on as normal until after the second treatment. And then see how she is :-)

Thank you . She came out last night for a run around but just sat in a corner grooming , she isn’t going on her wheel either . I did see her this morning for a snack .. really hope this treatment helps her . I think she was very scared at the vets but didn’t bite the vet when she was handling her luckily ! Thanks for you help

She'll probably get her confidence back in a few days :-)
