We've recently got a female Russian Dwarf hamster and we got the Pets at Home Plastic Home 1 cage. However, We've since found out that it's unsuitable. We want to have sure that we get the right thing now.

I'm looking at the following:

BUCATSTATE Hamster Cage 3.0 - Large Gerbil Enclosure 100L x 50W x 52H CM | 0.5㎡ Small Animal Habitat with Deep Bedding Space for Hamster Enrichment, Stackable Metal Frame, Front & Top Access (White) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0D5LNFTC6?tag=thehamsterfor-21 (it's cheaper on Temu)

Or...

https://www.ferplast.co.uk/products/domster-100 (it's cheaper at Pets at Home)

Any thoughts on either of these?

Thanks,

Matt

Hi. I would get the Bucatstate over the Domster. While I like barred cages myself and a dwarf hamster isn’t likely to chew through wood, I think the height and bars of the Domster create a fall risk for a dwarf hamster (in case they manage to climb to the roof and drop).

It’s a big decision choosing a cage or enclosure and expensive so you do right to work out option’s carefully.

There’s also a list of suitable cages and enclosures on our home page if that helps, but the Bucatstate is very popular. 😊

I use the Savic plaza cages - however then they need cardboard or Perspex adding inside the bars to allow for deep bedding. The Aura plexi gets round that problem but again I think that’s too tall for a dwarf hamster and best suited to a Syrian.

I've linked our cage list below :-) Another option that's good for a dwarf hamster is the Skyline Marrakesh. Which is basically a glass tank but with wood sides. I personally think it has slightly better ventilation than the Bucatstate, as the top is all small mesh, it has a mesh panel in the glass at the back, and wood breathes - but then it doesn't have a front opening door - but it does have a large top opening roof with hydraulic struts/hinges :-) It looks very nice too but it's also not cheap - about the same price as the Bucaststate (but if that's cheaper on Temu ...........).

Most of the barred cages need bedding panels to achieve deeper bedding, but also to make them less tall in height. There is the Grosvenor XL which is a lower height though and some people use that with just deep bedding at one end. You can either get tailor made perspex panels to keep the bedding in (from Viking Laser), or just use a cheap option like grass mats inside the bars (which looks less utilitarian than cardboard :-)).

So the Grosvenor XL is the least expensive option suitable for a dwarf hamster (also large top opening).

If you do get the Bucatstate from Temu, then maybe you could get it with our affiliate link here (it means the forum gets a small commission which helps fund our running costs, but it doesn't cost you any more :-)).

The cages in our recommended list below also have affiliate links for most of them (the Grosvenor XL and Marrakesh are also in the list).
