What is the meaning behind your hamster's name? I bet there are some cute stories out there. 🐹

I have had my hamster for about a month now. I got him following a fallout with my adult daughter.
The timing was why I named him Benjamin; it is a Biblical name. It means "Favorite Child."
I thought it was appropriate and cute.
My daughter and I will laugh about this together someday, hopefully.

Does anyone else have a fun story to share?

Aw - I hope things get resolved and you laugh about it 😊. It sounds difficult. Benjamin is a lovely name with a nice meaning. Most of my hamsters got named with some kind of mutual family decision - trying to find something we all liked but my stepson had a lot of influence. Our first hamster was his when he was 6 but ended up being my baby as I did most of the care. He was called Charlie - from a kids tv character.

Our second one took some naming - at first he was to be Charlie as well and I said that could be a bit confusing - maybe a different name. So he had about four names with Charlie as a middle name and ended up being Newtus Hamsterus or Newt for short. Stepson was studying the Romans and liked Fantastic Beasts (Newt Scamander).

Then we had Nugget - he had a few middle names as well and the adults designated one of the names as a main name. We all liked Nugget - after going through a list of names (he was a little Roborovski hamster). After that another Syrian who was a rescue - a black and white hamster called Moo. He already had that name when we adopted him at a year old and we liked it so kept it. He looked like cow colours.

Then there was Pickle - chosen from a shortlist of names abd OH particularly liked that one.

The next one was another Robo - Pip - short for Pipkin - it suited him - another one from a shortlist. After that I chose the names as others had lost interest!

So the next one was Raffy short for Raphael - because he was part angel and part ninja turtle šŸ˜‚. Very active boy and very sweet.

Then my current two - Tino and Higgins. I struggled with a name for Tino but it’s short for Valentino - he arrived the day before Valentine’s Day. Higgins is my other Syrian - I just chose it because I liked the sound of it and it suited him - commonly known as Higgy.

I found it really hard deciding on names on my own. With Raffy I had three shortlist names and couldnt decide what suited him - so I decided to let him choose. I called him with all three names to see which he reacted to - he reacted to all of them ha ha. But I settled on Raffy.

You have quite a legacy! So many cute names and very original! It is always more fun when the whole family gets involved. 🄰

My current hamster is a small grey dwarf hamster called Cindy as she was originally from a place called Cinderford. I was going to change it but somehow I got used to it and I can't imagine her called anything else now.

What a beauty she is! And that you can't imagine calling her anything else now, that just means you got it right the first time. šŸ˜

It was! I find it quite hard choosing names on my own! Does Benjamin have any nicknames yet? Many of us ending up calling them all sorts. Benjie Wenjie! Baby face and so on! Raffy used to be Raffikins and Raffmonster. Pip used to be toodle pip.

I think you did great. Raffmonster..Pip....adorable. Great idea, I should have asked about nicknames...I call him "Benny," "Benny Ben Ben," and "Fluff Butt"

My late buddy was already called Henry by the pet store I got him from. I waited a bit over a week to see his personality come out, and it happened to fit! There have been a bunch of explorers named Henry in history & fiction, he was so fearless he took after Indiana Jones in my book.

I am sorry for the loss of your brave (Indiana Jones-like) exploration buddy.😄 Henry is cute and dignified. Sounds like it was the perfect fit for him.😊

Back when my sister was pregnant with my niece, five years ago, my nephew (then aged four) came up with the name Rosie for her (from Peppa Pig, apparently). But then my sister and brother-in-law ended up not using that name. But I liked the name Rosie. And Rosie the hamster was called Rae at the rescue, and I liked the idea of keeping the same first letter.
