Hi,

So im getting a little confused on cage cleaning. So I see people either use a vinegar and water solution or dish soap and wipe it down with warm water after. They suggest dawn soap but I live in the UK so I cant get that. Do you have any recommendations? Also which cleaning solution would you recommend?

Im excited to set up the new cage i bought but I worry about the cleanliness.

Sorry to write a quick reply and run, but it's late here :-) I've linked our cage cleaning tips below, however. While it doesn't mention cleaning products, it gives an idea that they are very rarely needed unless there has been illness or disease - then you use a small pet-safe disinfectant. Vinegar/water isn't necessary for cleaning - some people use it if there has been a bug infestation (eg hay mites or similar) as it can kill some bugs - however it isn't a disinfectant as it kills some bacteria but not all. So it's not really needed except in specific situations which hopefully you won;t have.

For general cleaning of the base of an enclosure (as per the cleaning tips) you could just use soapy water. Fairy liquid water :-) However that doesn;t need doing very often. The main thing is not to clean everything at the same time or it removes all the hamster's scent marking and familiar smells and stresses them out. So cage items and wheel, as and when needed.
