Hi I just wondered what is right about using second hand hamster items, eg hideout, toys, wheel etc. Would the smell of the other hamster upset the one recieving those things? Including second hand cages. Appreciate any advice thank you

You can, but they need to be disinfected in case they are carrying respiratory or tummy bugs. It is quite an elaborate process with wooden things, but easier with ceramic and plastic. The metal parts of the cage can be cleaned, but parts with worn paint would need extra soaking, scrubbing, rinsing and drying.

I personally would not buy second hand wooden items. Ceramic and plastic wheels can be disinfected. Tanks and cages can also be disinfected.

If it is your own hamsters wooden items then I just pop them in the oven on the lowest heat for 45 minutes and leave them there until they are cold.

Hello - nice to see you again :). Anything plastic or ceramic can just be washed with dishwashing liquid and rinsed. Or to disinfect them, just spray them with pet-safe disinfectant and leave a few minutes and rinse off. Any smooth wood items can just cleaned similarly, or you can give them a light spray with disinfectant and then rinse and leave them to air. Any barkwood items like natural bark houses, shelves or bendy stick bridges, are harder to de-odorise/disinfect. You can bake them in the oven but to be honest I would probably bin bendy stick bridges as they are hard to get fully disinfected in the gaps.

Cork logs and other natural items like hyacinth or seagrass, you can bake in the oven at 100 degrees for about 30 minutes.

😊😊thanks everyone.
Out of interest apart from disinfecting, would the actual scent of another hamster upset another one? As I know they are solitary especially Syrians

Yes it can but if it's been a while it wears off a bit, and sticking things in the freezer for a few days would help remove a scent. Also leaving things out in the sun for a day (not at this time of year maybe). Things you can wash in soapy water is simple for that as that removes the scent. Baking should also remove the scent. I think bendy stick bridges are the things I wouldn't re-use. Not the rough bark ones anyway. I did scrub a smooth wood bendy bridge with soapy water - one of the coloured ones. With a toothbrush to get between the gaps. All the colour ran out! If you did that more than once, the metal bits would probably go rusty. When I say soapy water, I mean washing up liquid water, but just a plain washing up liquid - not floral or lemon scented etc. And then rinse well.

I’ve always wondered about this…all my female hamsters have had a wee corner which over time does get a bit dried up with dust from bedding, which is hard to get off. Would you still be able to reuse a cage in this instance 🤔

It would probably come off with white vinegar :) If you spray it on and leave it a bit.

I am going to use the unscented washing up liquid for sensitive skin it will be very mild but I reckon it will do the job well, and a sponge scourer.

Is it just to remove scent or are you wanting to disinfect them? (Eg if they were used by a hamster that died).

More that I have certain items I was going to give to my grandaughters for their hamster

It should be fine then, just removing the scent - if a hamster hasn't recently used them.

If you soak in boiling water it lifts off in pieces using a paper scrapper when I had guinea pigs their wee corner needed doing weekly dried and brown so I did the job in the bath while they were out in their run
