Hi, I wanted to know what kind of stone can i put in cheesy’s enclosure?
His nails are growing.

I'm sure someone else will come along soon with what they use :-) I use a rough granite tile. Some people use a slate tile. Or you can use a terracotta saucer (like the type you put under plant pots that's made of clay). Or you can actually use a large pebble or smooth stone but for that you'd need to disinfect it first and that can be a bit tricky. Some people boil them but there is a chance it could explode!

I think a terracotta plant base saucer is one of the easiest things to find. Best place is under a water bottle or bowl, then their nails get roughened every time they go for a drink.

However - all these things are heavy. So you can't really just put it on top of the bedding or the hamster might tunnel under it and it press down on them too much. We don't want a squished hamster! So there are a couple of options there. If you have a platform, you could put the rough tile or terracotta saucer on the platform and have the bottle or bowl over it. If you don't have a platform, you could have a small house under the substrate, supporting it so it can't move down.

Or, if using stones or pebbles (smooth ones), some people create a small area of stones/pebbles that sits on the base of the cage and builds up to the substrate level - like a small hill. However that method probably won't help much unless there is some reason for the hamster to climb on it daily - eg if you put their piece of daily fresh veg at the top!

What are others using? I have a rough granite tile from Rodipet under the water bottle in one cage and a terracotta saucer in the other cage. Rodipet is in Germany though so you probably can't access it. But I'd have thought terracotta plant saucers are available everywhere!

DIY stores should have them.

If it's smooth marble it won't help - it needs to have a rough texture :-) If it's unpolished it might be ok. unpolished granite is good.
