Tino's thread

What a relief to have Tino safe and sound back in his cage.
What a little rascal to be able to climb out of the bucket trap but at least you know his capabilities and determination if you ever need to lure him out from hiding again. He must like his cage and bedroom set up to be in and out and finally settle down to sleep inside.

Thanks Coco. I'll post some videos later. They are quite an interesting watch. Hamsters are very clever.

So here are the nightcam clips

About 1.43 am Tino emerges from under the sofa and finds the treats on the cushion leading into his cage. He goes into his cage, but comes out again.

From then and for about the next 25 minutes until about 2.10 am he repeats going in and out of the cage, running in the wheel and exploring a bit further in the room each time.

Here he is in and out of the cage

Then goes exploring a bit further away from the cage, under the coffee table.

He then spends a long time, about 50 minutes, in his cage wheel running, until about 3am and then goes exploring again - and finds the book ladder leading to the bucket trap. It's interesting that he stops, at the top of the book ladder and looks across to his cage, as if wondering if he should just go home! But instead he decides to investigate further and either falls or jumps into the bucket. He didn't walk along the ruler so it didn't fall in - it almost looks like he decided to jump in. In the bottom was a bit of fresh strawberry and cucumber.

About an hour later, the ruler, which is still partially over the bucket, disappears into the bucket. It looks like Tino may have jumped up and knocked it from underneath maybe in an attempt to get out. This is a very short clip, just a few seconds, showing the ruler starting to tip into the bucket.

About 20 minutes later, Tino climbs out of the bucket! It's right at the start of the video and he climbs out of the far side - the opposite side to the books. Then goes back to his cage, where he does more wheel running and then leaves the cage again. And it's interesting that he goes back to suss out what happened - walks around and looks up at the bucket (maybe thinking "hey my sunflower seeds are still in there") Inspects the book ladder from the side a couple of times. He is not going to fall for that again I think - he has it sussed now.

This is the last one and is about 3 minutes long but it's interesting seeing what he does.

He then spends the rest of the night (another couple of hours in and out of the cage, wheel running and exploring even further afield - he ran along the far skirting behind a small cupboard. Then went back to his cage into his house and went to sleep. Which is where I found him at 7am.

And then found this. This is where the ruler was inside the bucket - it seems he must have walked up it to climb out. Which is quite amazing.

So he's had an adventure, and a scare, and learned some new skills. He's a clever boy. But I think we'll have some quieter times now!

Wow, he is so brave! I never thought he would have been able to get out of the bucket! This is amazing and so facinsting. What an amazing adventure he had.

It wasn't clever of him to jump into the bucket! But wasn't it clever to knock the ruler in and then climb out again!

If I hadn't had the nightcam I would have been wondering how he was asleep in his cage, and yet the bucket trap had been used. Which is why my first thought was there must have been a mouse in the bucket trap as they can climb and jump well. I would never have believed a hamster could climb up a steep thing like that and climb out. But they did look like hamster poops. But I am very glad there wasn't a mouse!

Wow! 😲 He’s had the ultimate hamster playpen experience!! Anything smaller will just be dull now lol! What a cheeky monkey!!

Buckets, of course, are oddly shaped things that don't occur in nature.

Very pleased to hear Tino is back in his home. The videos are very interesting. Like a mini documentary on what an escaped hamster gets up to at night.

Raffy: I'm also very pleased Tino is back in his home. Perhaps I could have some free roaming time tonight Maz 🐹

Yes Raffy has missed two nights of free roaming now. Raffy's cage is directly behind and above where I had the nightcam so he could have seen the lot. I wonder if he semaphored Tino to suggest knocking the ruler into the bucket so he could climb out ...............

Amazing night time saga captured on the camera. As you say, you couldn’t have guessed what Tino did and escaping the bucket trap. What an adventure with all his exploration of the room.
Quiet time required from Tino now and Raffy needs his exercise time. No signalling from Tino is allowed!

All back to normal tonight! Tino back to being an invisible hamster and no sign of him.

Yes in hindsight it was slightly stressful!

In due course Tino will learn that he needs to use his hamster taxi to access the wider world, which he has laid claim to. I don't think it will take long for him to make the connection! He is going to want out again soon 🚕

My goodness theses little creatures just amaze me so intelligent it's scarey anyway pleased Tino was found safe in his cage

They are quite amazing aren't they? And he's just a baby - but has all the instincts. It certainly sounds true that they are great escape artists! I know some people put a small blanket in the bottom of the bucket - I don't as it reduces the height - and it isn't that far to fall anyway. I suspected a hamster might get out with a blanket or something soft in the bottom but didn't expect him to get out without it! I am glad he did get out though and go back to his cosy cage.
