The ratty girls

Having to keep a bit of a close eye on the rats. Luna is being a bit territorial, particularly of one of the hidey spots. I'm not sure if this is because I had just done a pretty thorough clean of the cage before realising Harley needed to go to the vets and that left Luna on her own in a cage that didn't have anyone elses scent on it or if it's because she's grumpy because she realises something is wrong with Harley. I hope it isn't the latter but either way she's being kind of a jerk right now...

Do they usually sort themselves out? I don't know anything about rats.

Yeah usually. If they're apart for too long it's sometimes necessary to go through intros again. I think this might be necessary if Harley has an operation as I'm now a little concerned that a week or more apart will break Luna's bond with her. Since I'll have to deep clean their cage again anyway it won't be too much more work to reintro them. I'll try to do daily supervised visits while Harley is in her hospital cage to help them remember each other.

Woke up this morning to find Harley and Luna snuggled together in the spot that Luna was being territorial over and they've been very quiet today so I think all is fine now :)

Harley is not enjoying being given her metacam. Was curious what Luna would make of the taste of the medication by offering her the basically empty syringe. She licked it and then bit the tip off the syringe while trying to grab the whole syringe off me. Classic Luna....

Harley is in for her surgery at the moment so we're all keeping our fingers crossed that she pulls through just fine...

I wish Harley all the best. I know you are going to be very anxious while you wait. I hope she pulls through and you get a call soon.

I hope all is going well for her & it won’t be too long before you have her back

So she came out of the operation ok. The surgery was more invasive than expected though. The tumour had thin bits spreading out into adjacent mammary glands so the vet had to remove quite a lot. Just hoping he got everything, time will tell I guess...

Thank goodness she is okay. I understand it is an anxious time waiting for her to recover. I really hope she is back to her usual self soon.

So glad to hear she came through the surgery ok, keeping everything crossed that she makes a good recovery now.

I'm sorry to hear Harley had to have such extensive surgery and fingers crossed she will recover well.

Somebody won't leave her stitches alone and has had to be wrapped

She is feeling really sorry for herself and hasn't been eating or drinking. Trying to get a little fluid into her with a syringe. I'll give her a little supervised break from the bandages later and hopefully she'll feel more inclined to eat and drink then. She has a lot of swelling but I sent some pictures to the vet and he thinks it's probably a seroma (fluid build-up), which isn't that unusual given how much tissue he had to remove.

It must be such a worry. I hope she begins to eat & drink & starts to make a recovery soon.

Do you think she may eat a bit of cucumber, apple or water melon to get some kind of fluid in her?

Thanks for the suggestions. I put some hot water onto some oats yesterday to make a very liquidy porridge and she did lick a bit of the water off the top. I can't even get her interested in sugar water. I think all the bandaging and swelling is making her feel very full and not wanting to consume anything...
