That's good they are smaller and drier. It's possible it was some kind of abscess perhaps then.

a good news update to say that the scab gradually came away and has now completely gone! Everything in the area looking normal now. We are very relieved!

That is great news Keep an eye on it and see what they look like when they descend/pop out again. I wonder what caused it.

I saw a photo in a hamster Facebook group which looked very similar to the photos here. In that case it was diagnosed as a cyst and it also cleared up with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.

Good to hear it's gone, whatever it was!
