Sometimes people use stones or pebbles in hamster cages. They need sterilising before being used but care needs to be taken in how to do this.

It’s not safe to boil then or put them in the oven as they could explode. It is only the exterior that needs disinfecting so just giving them a good wash and then pouring boiling water over them is enough. While taking care with boiling water too! Eg put the stone or stones in a plastic bowl or bucket and pour kettle water over them in that.
 
This is how I washed Sprite's sand stones. I kept putting them in a bowl of boiling water from the kettle and leaving them a bit and repeating until the water was clear.
