I think it is once it's dried but maybe needs using in a room well away from the hamsters until dry (although maybe that's incorrect if this particular gorilla glue doesn't have fumes.

It doesn't have fumes as it's a PVA-based glue, very similar to Ponal.

Thank you that's good to know Daisy - I must have been thinking of standard Gorilla glue.

Ok, trying to put some stuff together. I made a shelf for the back; it's tall enough for 10" of bedding and 2" of hiding space under. It's about 9" deep. My problem is getting everything to fit and not have the wheel down at 6-7" due to the sloping lid of our cage. From what I've tried so far, my options are:

1. Cut a 12"x6" section out of the middle of the board to recess the wheel into so it can raise up a few inches. The dig box could stay, but it does seem pretty full in there.
2. Not have the digging box in the cage. (it's this one) I could leave that in his playpen/roaming area. If I do this, I can move the shelf forward and put the wheel along the back wall, but the bottom of the wheel is an inch or so below the shelf, which makes me worried the critter will get stuck.
3. Eliminate the dig box, leave the self along the back, and create a lower elevation section for the wheel, though that ruins the all one level plan.

I have large dig boxes in the playground because they would take up too much space in a cage. It works well.

As for the wheel. Hmm. I wonder if it would work to place the wheel on the shelf and then put a free standing platform in front of it.

I’m just catching up, pleased to read you‘re all coping ok with the loss of Ralph. I agree it would be good to choose a hamster that looks different and go with an alternative set up, sounds like it’s going to be lovely.

Seems to me that 1 and 3 are similar options, but 1 has the wheel in the centre of the shelf, at a lower level and 3 has the wheel at one end of the shelf at a lower level - is that right? I'd probably go with 3 in that case - at least then it's still quite a long shelf, but stops short due the wheel at one end.

Or - would this work? If you have the multiroom house on legs, would the wheel fit on top of that? Or would there not be enough height for that? I was just thinking if the multiroom house buts up to the long back shelf at a 90 degree angle, it kind of extends the shelf a bit and also gives some access to the shelf.

That does look great :) . I'm guessing the wheel is supported underneath. Any hamster would love that.

Just wondering what are the two darker things at the back? I can't see very well :) A round dark thing at the back next to the wheel and a sort of oblong dark thing at the back near the sandbox on the shelf. The Pokemon hide is nice :) Is that your son's choice? The only other thing I would add (which you probably are going to anyway when you actually have the hamster) is a big pile of torn up strips of plain white toilet paper near the multiroom house (but not inside it). This will encourage the hamster to take them and build a nest in the nearby house.

It's a painted hill and a painted city (non-toxic paint on safe wood). The Boy wanted it to look "like a place". He's going to rub the toilet paper all over his hands right before we bring someone new home so the ham can get used to his scent. We did add a chewing/climbing log but I think we're about ready!

Ha yes, on a stand - the children were also confused and then looked at the side of the cage and went "...oh." Our 6 year old thought it was magic.
